Does anyone have any info on "Caterpillar" turbos.

I'm pretty sure they aren't the manufacturer, they just stamp their name into the compressor/turbine housing.

I have access to a few different VERY LARGE "CAT" turbos for free, but can't figure out what they are.

They are between the size of a HTB2 and B1. I'm planning on twins in the near future on my 12 valver and just wondered if anyone knows anything.

I've checked the SIS, and they all come up reman (which is normal).

Any help would be much appreciated. I'll get P/N and S/N today.

try to find somebody, or someplace that has CAT SIS, its a parts program on the computer, and get them to look up the info with the numbers off of the turbo. .

Cat uses AiResearch or Garret turbos, don't they?

I can't remember which honestly, but I know I've seen a yellow T04...

RJ, send a PM to CPjMech. He has been a big help on our Cat C-12 turbo problem. MMiller works for Cat as well. He could probably tell you.

Bryan, sshhhh, I don't know nothin! :D I've never really asked, just assumed that cat made most of thier own turbos on the engines they build. I've never seen any other names on the turbos on the big Cat engines. Now I mean from 3100's on up to the big gen set engines, I'm not talking about the mitsubishi or perkapillars. They are a differnt creature all together.

I gotta ask, what is wrong with the turbo? Apperently Cat did not want it to Reman it, or somebody just lost some core money. They usually don't throw away turbos, good or otherwise. Any of the few I have replaced had to go back. One time I gained access to about 6 rather large turbos of gen sets, cause of an update. Some lucky tractor pullers got those. I also have a small charger off a perkins 4 cylinder, maybe the boy's go cart will get it in a few years!!

don't know too much about the on road applications but most of the off road stuff uses Schweitzer turbos. Just my $02. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well here's the story. I'm currently in school, in a "Diesel Equipment Technology" class, that is funded and designed by Yancey Caterpillar. My teacher get engines and machines from their training facility for us to work on. And they give us engines that have blown up for whatever reason. We have quite a few 3406 B's and C's. 3116's, 3408's, and one 3512 (that's a man). We also get all kinds of other parts.

But, on the top shelf of one of the racks in our lab is the "leftover" stuff that is never gonna be used that we have acquired. I saw a few big turbos that looked to be in good condition, so I pulled them down and tore them down to check for bad stuff, just to find that they were good. I asked him about them and he said they were mine if I wanted them.

We have SIS in our lab, I checked on them and all the info I get is REMAN part numbers and gasket kits and stuff.

I'm pretty sure they came off of a 3406 truck engine, but I'm not sure. I guess I'll have to dig a little deeper.

Now for this question. Whether or not I can figure out what they are, can anyone think of any reason why one of these turbos wouldn't work well for twins?

My truck will be built on the advice of Jeff Garmon and should not make less than 600hp when all is said and done.
