Many thanks to all the good people who responded to my question about antennas. Because of the advice I am now set up and ready to go. Thanks all.

Got a Firestik hood bracket for a Dodge Ram and a 4 1/2 foot antenna. Now I have a send and receive distance of 4 miles, plus or minus. Happy all around and the antenna does not interfere with my slide-in camper, or the camper doesn't interfere with the antenna, depending on how you look at it.

Don't know yet because I haven't had the camper on the truck yet. Won't know until probably May 31 when we take off for Alaska with another couple. The guy at the CB shop said aluminum sided RVs really screw up the signal. My camper is fiberglass and he said it shouldn't be affected very much. Hope he's right.

Why don't you run dual antennas to form the propagation wave as a countereffect to the trailer? I have a cheap magnetic mount, and I have talked to people 6-7 miles away.

My setup is now working very well, with a range of 4 miles that I know for sure. This is more than enough for traveling with friends.
