i have a cobra 19LTD that i bought from a flying j truckstop i think it is about 5. 5 inches wide. It is mounted just to the left of the glove box and just below the vent that is next to the glove box. there is a place where the plastic of the dash turns and goes back and down at a 45 degree angle at the bottom there. i put the screws and braket there it is out of the way of the shifter and is still reachable. there is just barely enough room for it there as the bottom of the dash curves out right there. I do however have to take the mike of the hook when i open the glove box but oh well. also i taped right into the cigarette power source right there with scotch locks
I have a uniden grant xl mounted to the ceiling. I made a spacer and used sheetmetal screws to mount the spacer to the ceiling and then bolted the mount to the spacer. then i made two cuts in the headliner so the mount stuck through the liner. I ran the coax to the back corner and down the rear cab post, and the power from the fuse panel up the front cab post. i use dual firesticks in the bed corners and get good results. Good luck! let us know what you do.
I run a Galaxy 33 mounted on a shelf-it. I run the coax/ power wires behind the trim to the firewall where I have a hole and a grommet. The power is directly hooked to the battery. I've tried magnet mounts but have broken 2 of them. One was radio shack and the other was a K-40. The magnet just separated from both. The radio shack didn't want to stay on the roof at high speeds but never had a problem with the K-40 until it broke. I'm now looking to get something mounted to the cap.
In the 89 I mounted the radio similar to Cummins Cowboy except that I removed the duct on the heater that is on the front as it has 2 screws on the bottom and unclips from the top then drilled through the heater housing and mounted the bracket. The Mic has a hook on it an I just had a hook out from the ash tray to hang it on. The main problem was that to adjust the levels required alot of effort to reach around the shifter/consol and I just shut the thing off. . I also remote mounted a speaker for the radio so I could hear it all the way from over there.
In the 93 I mounted it on the ceiling and like it much better for adjustments and I find that I use the radio more.
I have mounted the antenna (wilson) in the box bolted to the front stake post hole. I haven't got a new radio yet as I was lining up a Uniden XL but still have Radioshack. .
