I hate to admit it, but I used the same antenna mount as "Tommy Too Stock"! It is a mount you can get at any Radio Shack, and protrudes from under the hood... just tell them you want it for a Ram. I do think the roof is better for reception, just didn't want to drill in it. As far as the CB, I put it between the shifter and the glove box, just under the dash. Glad to see ya are on your way to BOMBing... we have much more FUN!

I took a piece of 2" x 1/16" flat, put a small offset in it and a hole, welded another piece to it to form a T and sandwiched it between the left, center seat bracket and the center seat. Fastened the C B to this bracket it faces upwards and is right there nice and handy.

The center mount that Mark and Paul described is the best place to mount your CB. I tried several different mounting places (most were under the dash because I hate drilling holes in the area below the instrument panel. There are several web pages with pictures and drawings describing the mounting procedure. If you use a small sheet of plywood attached with brackets to the right and left center seat brackets, you have room for several radios. All of the wiring (except the coax cables) is run under the carpet to the firewall. The coax cable is run under the boot on the trasfer case lever. I have had as many as 3 radios mounted at one time (CB, Two-Way, and a scanner). It makes it a real pain to haul anyone in the center of the front seat, so you might take this into consideration. I can't remember where I found the exact photos of the installation, but I think it was on or can be found from a link on Dave Fritz's web page http://dodgeram.com/

As for the antenna, the higher the better. I have mine mounted on my headache rack. No drilling holes in the body for me. And I can remove the antennas easily when I need to get into a parking garage. Having your antenna on the roof might make removing it a little troublesome.

The way that Mak's is mounted looks alot like mine, except I did not add any holes in the truck. It is a real handy place to have it.

I had a Cobra Remote CB, a discontinued model but Corba has a new model that is remote mounted. I put the main unit under the drivers seat and made a small L shaped bracket and attached it just to the right of the steering wheel (where the dash rolls under so you don't see the holes) to hold the hand-piece/mic. . There aren't to many choices to mount a CB and have it easy to opperate so the remote kind is a good choice because I have the controls right where I can see them while driving. Cobra has a web site, check out the new remote CB.
I mounted my antenna on the side of my tool box. That was the easy way!

Ram_kowboy, Like the others have said the center mount in front of the non movable seat section works good. I went to Lowes and got some 1/8 X 1 1/2 alumminum straps built an L bracket coming off the two bolts that that hold the seat cushion in place not the bolts to the floor. The bracket under there is a channel type so take a piece of 1/2 inch tubing cut two 5/8 inch spacers so when you get the L bracket spaced right just weld the two spacers in place. Tie in some crossbracing welded in place.
Run the coax back under the back seat and next to the jack mount(extened or quad cab) there is a knock out plug in the floor pan to run the coax out. Just notch the plug and put it back in. This is also a good place to run some power wire if your running alittle help.
As far as the antenna goes the higher the better, plus to get good range the center of the roof can't be beat. A good quality magnet will work better than anything else. Unless you wish to drill a hole in the roof. I run a Uniden grant XL with a Wilson 5000 magnet and routinely talk in the 15 to 20 mile range to base stations and easily talk 12 to 15 miles mobile to mobile, and when the skip is running I talk WorldWide!! There is an advantage to working in a CB shop a couple of days a week. Regards Pete

I have the A/T and mounted mine right on the front of the pulldown cup holder. Out of the way in every instant. When you use the holder the radio just folds down with it. Had to do over, I would not run the power wire over to the fuse box. I would just plug it into the computer 12V outlett.

Look at my signature. Let me answer your CB location question. If you have a manual shift (of course you do) remove that cheap looking chubby holder insert radio.

How I did it a little labor intensive but you will be happy long story short two screws hold the Center console storage to the dash which you access by removing the black trim around the dash. Grab your service manual for screw locations.

Here's the fun easy part use the mounting bracket that came with the radio and attach the bracket to those steel cross bars behind the dash using nylon zip strips. (EZ) Attach radio to bracket,co-ax,Pa. Now for your mic you will need a right-angle plug, on the Grant it comes straight out.

The Grant XL is a huge radio but it does not intrude into my cabin and is a handsome addition to my dash.

I mounted my Midland 77-115 40 CB today.
One thing is for sure no place in dash that looks good. I mounted it in front of the fixed center seat. I built a small wood box and mounted the box to the floor. The CB slips straight down so face is pointing up. I then carpeted box--looks factory. Ran power wire to radio fuse since that fuse is filtered. I used a Midland 18-258 40 (through the glass) antenna on the rear window on drivers side and reception is very good.

Pete -

Where/how did you run the antenna lead on your Wilson magnetic; and -2) how do you keep the cable from rubbing on the roof ?

Thanks in advance for the info,

Rob

Rob, the coax on the Wilson runs strait down the back window. I set the magnet about five inches in front of the third brake light, the coax rest on the light bezel and doesn't chafe the light or coax. There is a crossmember directly between the cab and bed which I tie-tied the coax to, ran it to the passenger side took the knockout plug out below the jack mount and ran the cable through there. The rug is already cut for the jack mount and there is plenty of room for the coax. I welded a alumminum bracket together for the radio, bolted it under the center seat and was done. Like I said in my previous post the antenna on the roof gives you tremendous range in both receive and transmit. Hope this helps. Regards Pete

P. S. The wilson has been up there a year and no problems. Just remember to remove it wash and wax where the magnet sits and you'll be fine.

I have already learned the hard way about wiring directly to the fuse box: near dead battery. So what switched power source do you tap into? Is it OK to splice into the radio line, and if so, which wire is the + power lead?
Thanks

I bought a Cobra 75WXST Compact remote mount CB. It is all in the Mic. Has memory, Weather channels, Scan, all in the handset. Mounted it below the fuel guage on the dash, can see it through the steering wheel. Works great and has super sound. Small antenna box mounted under the drivers seat.

Cost about $110. Antenna seperate, roof mounted.

Here is a new twist, but if you ever roll the Cummins you will probably get banged up. I mounted a 1/2" plate of p-glass in the roof between the lining and the sheet metal. It was drilled and tapped to fit the CB mounting bracket and epoxyed in place. Access was gained through the dome light. 45,000 miles and it is still there. The p-glass should be degreased and the surface roughed up a bit to get a good bond. Wiring was routed across roof under headliner and down the A pillar.

The 92' was fitted with a shelf-it and when sold to my Brother he installed a CD right in the middle and ran the wiring over to the "B" pillar. Don't know why this wouldn't work in the newer body if you wanted a Shelf-it.

DiverDave, I have the same CB, I made my own mount for the holder clip, it's a piece of metal sticking up from the shift boot, and the mike is next to my right knee. It's out of the way, easy to get to, and I didn't have to drill any holes (I used the shift boot screws). The first time I really made use of the CB was when Greg Whale and I went out to the desert to photograph my truck for the cover of issue 24. I had a hard time hearing him with that little speaker in the microphone, so I had to set the mike in my lap. I solved that problem by mounting a remote speaker on the B-pillar so it's behind and above my head. There is a remote speaker jack in the box that the mike and antenna plug into. The remote speaker has a hook shaped piece of sheet metal on the top, and I hooked it on the top edge of the plastic side trim where it meets the headliner. To keep it from bouncing off, I replaced the top trim screw with a longer one and used that to hold the plastic base in place. The screw hole in the base lined up perfectly, so again, I didn't have to drill any holes. I highly recommend a remote speaker for the "everything in the mike" type CB's.
BTW, you can see the mike for my CB sticking up from the floor in the interior shot on the "your rides" page.
Andy
