I'm installing a CB and want to power it from under the driver's seat. I have the electric seat so there is power available. Any suggestions on which wire to tap into? I'd prefer it be controlled (on/off) by the ignition switch but if that isn't available I can live with a full time power supply.

Any words of caution about noise using the existing power?

I tried that same idea on my power seat equipped Ram to power a 2 way radio. It works, but if you move the seat the radio lights dim, which in the long run is not good to do to electronics. If you dont adjust your seat much while the CB is on, i would not be worried. As far as what wire to use, i just used my test light and probed around for one. It was so long ago, i dont rember which. I ended up running a direct line from the battery. Took about 35 minutes, and i have no worries now. Used the exsisting grommet in the fire wall and ran the wire under the carpet trim and out through the exsisting hole under the seat.

Scot: The connector under your seat has three wires to it (unless you have heated seats, then disregard this post). Tap the red/blue wire for positive, and the black/green wire for negative. Don't know what the third one is for.

EMDDIESEL: Your post says; "Used the exsisting grommet in the fire wall" to bring your power wires through. Looked for quite a while this afternoon for a large enough grommet to pull a coax through (possibly with a little enlarging). Can you please tell me where that grommet is? Running out of blind places to stick my hand in #ad
Thanks in advance!

David

If you are lookig at the firewall from the front, it is below and to the right of the master cylinder. It looks like a black circle. Use a bright light so you dont accidently overlook it. I have six wires ranging from 14 to 16 gauge going through there plus a 4 gauge Amp wire, the boost hose, EGT probe wires and the Trans temp sender wire and there is still room for more so you should have no problem with the coax. I used a coat hanger (Cut and bent so it is straight) and pushed it through the grommet from the engine compartment. Then, lying under the dash attatched the wire i needed to pull and yanked it through.

Great EMDDIESEL! I'll look for it in the morning. Thanks very much!! BTW, we have something in common (besides the trucks). I've been a long time RR fan and modeler. Can't hold a candle to what you do, but am ingrossed in it none the less. So..... what's the next surprise to come out of EMD?

Thanks!!

David

The next big suprise to some out of EMD? my guess would be LAYOFFS!. Unfortunatley most railroads are winding down locomotive purchases since they have replaced most older units and buissness is slowing. But who knows, i HOPE i am wrong. Other then that i would not expect to see anything replacing the 6,000HP SD90MAC's anytime soon.

EMDDIESEL: Sorry to hear about the layoff thing. I unfortunately just got laidoff myself... . no fun #ad
Anyway, let's hope that doesn't happen to you. As an engineer (trainman), would you not be one of the last to go if they did go through with layoffs? Administrative first, workers last???? Keeping my fingers crossed for you!! Good luck #ad

David

I should be ok, i am hopfeully transferring to the bronx soon anyhow where there is more work. Thanks for the concern, good luck yourself.
