cb radio questions

Looking to get a cb for my truck, got my buddy talked in to getting one too. Mainly doing this out of curiosity/fun/informational.



Is there anything to know about buying a used unit? I'm seeing several on craigslist here for under $50. Antennae recommendations and mounting locations would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Before you go looking at used units and try to figure out if they are functional take a few minutes and run up to amazon.com. Do a search on CB Radio.

Since you are just getting going you might be interested in the Midland 1001Z for $29 and free shipping. (I've aimed a lot of people at this little cheapy and they all love it. It's small, lightweight, easy to use... . and cheap. Besides, it's cheap. ) They even have a Cobra mag mount antenna that you can get with it for $54. (that's for both the CB and the antenna)

make sure to find some one with a SWR meter to adjust the antenna once installed. as far as for "good" starter antenna id go with the wilson "lil" will, its great for low power raido's (under 150 watts). Ive got a uniaden 68 thats been tweeked & wilson 1000 and love it.

Look at the Uniden PRO520xl. It's compact with minimum dials and I have never had an issue with it. I ran a 8ft fiberglass whip (I believe they told me it was 1/4 wave) opposite the radio antenna. I always out performed the other people in my group on transmit and receiving. A logger buddy of mine has the same unit and has a $10 antenna that we dialed in with a SWR meter and it works very well also.

Does your truck have the center console? If not I have a mount that I had in my 99 with the same radio, it fit between the seats and secured to the seat frames, the radio mounted with the face up and tilted slightly forward, it has a stalk for the microphone. It is made from aluminum flat bar. It's in my way. bg

My truck has the fold down seat in the middle with storage underneath. Not sure if I want to mount it under steering wheel or not???

Here's a pic of my 06'. Not sure on your interior. I've had the weather alert activate more than once. Very handy. Avoid the Cobra 75.

Spend the money on a good ant. and have it tuned (SWR). If you don't performance will suffer and you can burn up the radio.

For sure there are as many likes and dislikes its just a personal preference. The Cobra 29 my son has, has been around many years. The only difference in that and my Ranger is the bells and whistles and mine had to be converted to talk on the CB channels. As for the antenna for ease of install and quality Wilson Mag mount is hard to beat. If all you want to do is talk with your buddies driving down the Hwy (going the same way) most all of the radios talk just fine. Most of all do your self a big + and what ever you buy take it to a shop and have it tweaked and peeked (a tune up) they set it up and you will be allot happier with it. The radio has become a tool of the past with the advent of the cell phone. But it is fun to talk to someone and pass the time and find road info. Make sure of who is in your car when you turn it on KIDS really dont need to hear some of the exploits of truck drives and lot lizards and for sure watch out for the RAIDO RAMBO'S able to wipp supermans A** faster than a bullet and able to eat same, and S*** thumb tacks. The CB is better than any Starbucks at keeping you awake have fun and watch out for RAMBO AKA BIGNASTY
