What kind of range are you needing? And what type of terrain?

In a vehicle they aren't much good. If you are up high you can talk a few miles maybe. Skip is still a problem.

I just bought a good mobil unit for the truck and it has paid off. I was able to avoid an interstate that was backed up from an accident. Also the truckers watch the bears.

Your best bet for a walkie talkie is G. M. R. S.

The FRS is very limited.

I bouhght 3 audiovox gmrs units for hunting. They are 3 watts each. They will talk from 1 to 5 miles depending on terrain.

thanks I guess I'll get one installed. I wanted it for the reasons listed. Especially traffic as I usually just go five over the limit anyway.

Cobra!

I just bought a Cobra (75X I think); all of the dials are on the mike. It's got the latest ST (sound tracker) tech. It boosts your signal going out, and holds onto and clears up weaker signals coming in.

I was going to use an old CB that I had, but was having a hard time with a mounting place. Rips sells a mounting bracket for $45 plus shipping that attaches to the middle consol, but at that price I decided to shop around.

I came across this gem and I'm glad. I attached every thing under the front seat (wireing and little attachment box with velcro) the CB mike holder just on the side of my transfer case housing down off my light foot.

Everything is out of the way, and hidden from view. Perfect.

Works better than any other unit I've ever seen.

Check them out!!!!:D

Lowell

Re: CB

Even better them GMRS is MURS radios. Radio shack carrys some. There in the frequency of the old business radio service (152mhz I think, where GMRS is around 462mhz). Plus your allowed more power then GMRS, and external antennas. Only problem is its new, and has not caught on yet so plan on buying more then 1 if you want to talk to somebody.

I can talk 25 miles plus with my 144mhz hand held 5 watt ham radio to someone with a big antenna, or at least 10 miles hand held to handheld with just the short antenna on the radio. Hook it to a external antenna and the range almost doubles, with only 5 watts. I would expect the near the same results with MURS, where 462mhz is more line of site type radiation patterins.

Better yet, go to radio shack and buy the book "now your talking" Study the test questions and answers and take the first level ham test. The test is easy, and cheep (less then 10 bucks), that will get you on the air where there are lots of people to talk to! (with no bad language)
