iam looking for a new CB, the one i have now has seen it's better days.

i want something with the weather channel's in it and with a SWR meter

i was looking at the corba 29 does anyone run it?

or what else is out there?

There are many GREAT radios out there. I am on my second 29. The first one was a 29 classic. Second one has the Night Vision. Duluth Diesel has my radio, with the weather channel like you are looking for. Galaxy makes some VERY good radios, but it may be beyond what you would want or use.

I am currently looking into how to get more power output from my new 29. I had my last one turned up, I could hit people EASILY into the Red on the SWR at about 7 miles. No boot or any outside mods. If you get a Cobra, let me know... and I'll let you know how mine goes.

Cobra 29's are a good radio, but they are FAR from the best on the market. The SWR meters aren't incredibly accurate, but they'll get the job done. A stock, off the shelf radio just plain sucks; even with a good antenna, you can usually see farther than you can talk. If you're looking for SWR/WX etc, you're pretty much stuck with a Cobra. A peaked and tuned 29 will serve you well with about 15-20 watts, compared to the stock 5. Others, such as the Connex, Galaxy, and Ranger radios, can put out 40 to 150 watts without an external linear amplifier.

Find a good CB shop in your area or visit 12voltCB.com. 12 Volt does ALL my work, I won't go anywhere else. I've got a Connex 3300HPP... It's a great radio. There are WAY too many hacks who have learned basic electronics and now call themselves a CB shop, and sorting through them if very hard without a trusted friend or trial and error.

If you'd like to get a radio from 12 volt, and have it BOMBed... they won't do that through the mail... I'd be happy to do it for you. I can take credit cards, but I'd prefer a postal money order. I can get the total for whatever you want, you send me the money order, I'll get the radio and ship to you ASAP.

Send me a PM if you'd like to set something up.

The newest and latest radio piece to create quite a stir amongst the professional road drivers are the new Magnum S-3 and S-9's. I have gotten one of each to upgrade my road arsenal from my old trusty Galaxy's. These also are a very good choice if you like export style radios. The Magnums are some of the most impressive talking radios I have seen in a long time.

If its a domestic style the the Uniden 76 series is one of the toughest out and a proven reliable unit. These are based off the older Phillipine made Cobra 29LTD's. One thing to keep in mind when you do buy a radio is tuning. If your planning on having it "peaked and tuned" stay away from any radio that has a weather band Installed in it. They will not provide you with the audio drive a Non-weather band equipped radio will.

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to drop me a PM... ... ... Andy

I have a Cobra 29 LTD Classic. As far as transmitting it does good out of the box.

I don't like the sound of the radio on receive. The built in speaker has the same sound as an external speaker. Both are raspy sounding.

The squelch leaves a little to be desired. If you set it to block static then someone has to be close to hear them. If someone with power breaks the squelch at a distance you most of the time get a load of static with it to. It tends to be all or nothing on squelch.

The built in SWR! Do not use this feature. It is not trust worthy. Trusting one will lead you to a blown set of finals somewhere along the line.

I have had and used CB's for the last 30 years. They are the first thing I install in every truck I get. Over the years I have used Royce, Cobra, Midland.

Of the three brands I listed and used. The Royce had the best sound and squelch controll. The Midland was second. The Cobra was last.

On falling apart from vibration the Midland's was the worst. The Cobra comes in second. The Royce held up the best.

Finding someone to tune up a radio. The Cobra is 1st in this place. Midland is 2nd. Royce isn't made anymore so no reason to rank it.

Total number of radio's in 30 years> 5 ea Cobra's > 4ea Midland's > 1ea Royce.

The Cobra's died from broken boards from vibration. The midland's died from vibration also. The Royce died from a bad kicker. The Royce was a epoxy brick inside. No repair possible. I used it for almost 20 years. If I find another one this Cobra will find a new home. I bought this Cobra about a year ago.

I have the Cobra 75 WX ST. It is a pretty nice radio. It is a 40 channel with the sound tracker noise reduction technology. It has a digital display, with several nice features. It also has a built in 10 channel NOAA weather radio. One thing I like about it, is that it uses a remote mount system. It disconnects from the control box so you can take it to another vehicle, or you can just remove it for security purposes. With the "Firestick" 4' fiberglass adjustable SWR antennaes, I was able to get really close to a 1. 5 setting. -Nicholas

I have always been one to have a CB in my truck and I have used it alot when huntng and traveling with other rigs. I have owned Cobras and like them but upgraded to a Galaxy 10m this last time. I love it. It hasn't let me down yet and it is clear and powerful after I got it tuned up at the shop. I think the antenna is really important and you cant spend too much on one. I get compliments on the clarity of my transmissions when I do yack at others and the wilson 1000 plays an equal part I think. The true "Ham" guys frown on us talking on the 10m side of our radios and to be honest, I haven't heard anyone on those frequencies yet. It is nice knowing that you have over 300 channels though.

Happy with the Galaxy.

On the low side of the 10 band you won't hear anyone talking, all you'll hear down there is morse code unless some other people are operating there illegally...

Remember the "freebands" between the CB allocation and the 10m band allocation are really not free, they're mostly allocated to various groups, and it could be a problem for you if you get caught using it...

I have 2 Connex 3300's, one with Galaxy 88 Finals in it, the other was given to me by a friend, and really walks the dog, so I dont know whats been done to it. I also have a Cobra 29. Had it for 8 years now. Good radio, had one with weatherband, got rid of it because it was JUNK! if you want a weatherband radio, buy a weather radio from Radio shack. Weatherband runs at a totally different frequency then what 10 and 11 meter radios do. Also, a stock 29 or any store bought radio does not get out very far. Really. I used to think mine did, till I got equipped with the chicken hauler's package (Mod'd Roger beep sounding like a donkey fart, connex board, and talkback with RK56 mic), and was like WOWY! Big difference!

As far as being on the low side of 10, we use it quite a bit when doing road trips, just because you dont have everyone talking down there, ya know! It sure is nice to have! Only with a big radio!

Here is a shot of the S-9. .

Hammer, that is a real nice looking radio! I run a Uniden Grant XL with upper and lower sideband and was looking into a Ranger 2950 for the 10meter. What is the price tag on that S-9? That's nice!!!!

im also running the connex 3300HP (rebel face plate. ) nice sounding radio. one of the loudest audio circuts on the market. with a good tune, and RK56 these radio's walk over everybody.

I'm working just south of South Park this week, actuall im wireless right now in the Kenny Ross Ford Body Shop parking lot. How far you guys think i am from Harrisville? We just bought a new 05 Quad Cab and in the process of equiping it to tow with, and need a good CB.

supersonic, 12 volt is in Barkeyvill right off RT. 8 south. From where you are at take 279 N to 79 N to I 80 E take that to the Barkeyvill ext, which is old ext 3 I forget the new ext number. As soon as you get to the top of the ramp you make a right hand turn on to RT. 8 south you will then see a sign for a truck wash and tank wash facility on your left make a left down that driveway and follow it to the end. Look on you left side and you will see a blue and yellow trailer that is where 12 volt sits.

From where you are working to get to there it should be about an hour or just a tad more. Well, worth the trip, believe me, they do all my work.
