hey everyone i am in the market for a new cb radio. i currently have a midland 79-265 that is about 15years old and was looking for something newer and was wondering what everyone else thought was a good new model cb radio for me to look at? i plan on mounting it to big bob's mount in my truck. thanks.

What I have-

1- Cobra 29 ST NW WX (in the Ram)

1- Cobra 29 D. Earnhardt, Jr. Special Edition (combine)

1- Cobra 25 ST NW (Mack)

1- Midland 77-250 ESP2 (KW)

Have had a couple of problems with the Midland. Backlight, talkback, memory presets quit working 2 days after installing the radio. Haven't found the reciept to send it in to Midland. Took it to a CB radio shop, but for some reason they didn't any info on it, to fix it. And they were selling that model, too. Other than that, no problems with it at all.

My boss has 2 Cobra 18 radios, but I hate them.

The rest of the Cobras work great.

I own the Galaxy DX979 and for the money just under $200. 00 I don't think you can buy a better CB or one with all the extra's. :D

I have a Uniden Grant XL that is several years old. Its since been peaked, I believe and I run a power mike on it. Its works fine for me. My friends complain that when I talk, they have to turn their radios down, but when somebody else talks, they can't hear them :-laf I dunno though, Bryan how does my radio sound? I know the one in your Dodge works well.

I have a Grant XL with a 900 watt amp, and Wilson 1000 Ant. I get out all over town, loud and clear. I would recommend the Grant. You can do a lot of mods to this radio. Or you can go for a 148, I like the Grant better.

Sounds great on my end. :D It is set perfect. Have never had to turn mine down. Even if you are a couple miles out, you still sound like you are right next to me.

My 29 in the Ram is bone stock. It does get out. My boss' wife brought my truck out to the field for me one afternoon. My boss was running the grain cart. She was talking to him on it. Sure was glad I didn't have the ear piece plugged in on the headset mike I use in the combine. :--) :--) VERY loud. Had to turn my radio down. :-laf

I'm running the new President (Hillary) Clinton rig. . has 4 BS settings and talkback, but comes without a warranty.

-Brett :)

Don't forget the noise maker toys. :-laf Screech owl is one of them.

Oh, and there is a MX switch in place of the WX. It will tel you which direction the moderates are blowing that day.

You might try this sight... I've never used them..... but I've been told that their tuned radios are to die for..... they custom tune each radio for max output... plus they have some special services like export radios and amps that you might find interesting...

I also recommend 1 Stop Electronics. As far as CB's, I recommend Uniden PC-68, PC-78 and the Grant CB radio's if you just want a standard CB radio. A little tuning and they really talk! I also recommend a Wilson Antenna. I have the 5000 mounted in the center of my cab.

I'm running a Connex 4300hp, with a Wilson 1000 Ant. that really gets out. All tuned up it's about 100 watts :) I am very happy with it! I'm using one of Big Bob's CB mounts, and it looks great too :) Thanks for the great mount Bob, it's a perfect fit!

Technical Information on Antennas

The radio is important but don't forget the antenna.

I found a lot of technical information on antennas on the Firestik site:

http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs.htm

I spent hours reading the pros and cons of different antennas, mounting locations, cabling and tuning. It is good information regardless of what brand antenna(s) you choose.

A great radio that is attached to an average or poor antenna system will get most of it's power reflected back to the radio, possibly frying the electronics. The problem is much greater with an amp. SWRs of 1. 5 might be OK for 4 watts but will be a problem at 40+ watts.

You might as well get everything out of your radio that you can. If you pull a trailer, configuration is VERY important. Duals require different cabling than a single. Ground plane or no ground plane... . the options are many.

What got me started on all this was the simple action of hooking up a SWR meter ($40 at Radio Shack) to my CB/glass mount antenna. GEE!!! :--) SWR was sky high. I'm surprised I have not fried my CB. Read on the Firestik tech site about glass mount antennas, not their favorite!

Ok, ok, the radios I am going to suggest are probably a tad over-kill. That's what I USED to think until gonehuntingagain and I got stuck up the pumpkins in the middle of BFE, North Idaho and he used his Ranger RCI 2950 to get a hold of somebody to help pull us out.

Ranger RCI 2950

When I get mine, I am going to compliment it with dual 10' hick whips. Sure am glad my wife doesn't read this forum!!! :-laf

the 2950 is a good radio, but I prefer the 6300F for 'ease of use'... it has a regular 40 channel display... and the 6300F-150 has 150w!!!
