cb "tone" switch

I just picked up a used cobra 29 nw st and it has a "tone" switch with two possitions, "hi" or "normal". Any ideas what it does? (I'm using a slightly different manual and there is no mention of the tone switch in it).

My guess it would be audio output tone. Listen to it while flipping the switch.

I was thinking that too, but then I came to wonder whether it would be changing the tone of my transmissions or just while recieving?

Most likely only on receive - sometimes switching to the "low tone" position will knock out some of the high-pitched static interference.

It knocks out some of the more annoying static noise. It doesn't take all of it out though. You'll still need to adjust the squelch. sp? I have the Cobra 29 Classic.
