Highway Robbery...literally!

Only in Florida!?

I must have missed this since I don't get behind the wheel of a big rig much anymore. I received a notice from the Alabama Department of Public Safety advising me that effective March 31, 2014 my CDL and/or driving privilege would be cancelled for failure to comply with Federal Regulation 49 CFR 383, 384, 390 and 391. This regulation requires me to declare the type of operation I am engaged in. "Effective 01/30/2012 all Class A, B, or C drivers must submit this affidavit".

Alabama has now tied the medical exam, that some of us didn't bother with because we weren't driving big rigs anymore, to the CDL license. We no longer carry the old health card. If stopped our medical status is immediately available to the officer when he runs our CDL number.

Some of you may have to rethink your respective states' regulations and procedures which may now have changed due to the Feds. I raced over to the doc's office and brought everything up to speed.

Montana did the same, I believe all states have to do this, or will have to follow, because it is Federal.

RI has done this also. On top of self cert, either intra or interstate, must present our med cert to the DMV in person every 2 years for their records, but we still have to carry it with us. This is great. Med cert every 2, renew lic every 5. 3 trips to DMV every 5 years. Like that doesn't cost me anything to miss work. I don't know who's worse. Them for doing it to me, or me for staying here and taking it.

I started to receive nasty grams from WY about my med card and that they would cancel my license entirely!! Plus I had to pay for the fingerprint crap again to keep my HM endorsement (they may have changed :-laf) Total BS IMHO!!

FWIW... Just be sure to have all of the crap they need to scan in on hand the first time you show up: Long form med card, certified copy of birth certificate, proof of residence etc... Lots of hoops to jump through to renew a CDL nowadays #@$%!

I'm sure it would've been a lot easier if I spoke another language and waved a work visa in their face!! #@$%!

Maryland started this several years ago. Whenever it gets close to my med cert expiring I get an email telling me I need to supply a new cert or surrender the CDL privilege. I can fax a new one to them, or hand carry to the DMV office.
I dropped my hazmat last renewal due to the continuing requirement to get finger printed on every renewal. I did it the first time 5 years ago thinking it was only a one time thing.

DMV must stamp the Med Cert for your records regardless, and you must declare your intentions of over the road driving or in-state driving.
