Had my passenger side battery out of the truck while installing my Frantz filter. Also disconnected the sensor on the air intake and the grid heater relays.

Once everything was back together my CEL stays on. Did the code check thing with the key and all I got was "------" and then "-done-" after a few seconds, followed by the odometer reading. Have tried several times and always the same result; CEL is on, "------", then "-done-", then odometer.

Anyone have any experience with this? Wish I could afford that StarScan and the updates!

Robin, not trying to be smart but by your description I'm not sure if you started the truck. I beleive the CEL should go off on startup if no codes are present.

Sorry, I guess I was not clear. I did start the truck after each time I checked for codes and the CEL stays on. It normally goes out right after startup (never timed how long).

Hook up a can bus compatible scanner... ... ... ..... there will be a code. If it was just the sensor being disconnected it will go out after enough good trips, but the code will be stored till it gets cleared.

I don't have a CAN compatable scanner. The one from Auto Enginuity is on my Christmas list.

Figured I'd swing by my dealer while doing some errands and get them to do a look see. I must have scared the truck, when I started it on the last stop before the dealer the CEL went out! I went into the dealer anyhow and the service guy said don't worry about it. "If the light is out and there are no codes and it seems to run good, don't worry about it. " Doesn't exactly give a guy a whole lot of peace of mind.

I am now convinced that having your own scanner is a good idea. Especially when the dealers attitude is "don't worry". I think it must have had something to do with the sensor on the air intake being disconnected. Then after X number of good starts it cleared the warning as Bob suggested. When it gets serviced next the tech will be able to see it in the history I guess.

Thanks for all the help guys.

The CEL will extinguish after 5 restarts without the originating code reappearing. Any codes stored will reset after 40 consecutive warmup cycles without the code reappearing.
