On the two piece rear driveshaft that has the center bearing, should there be any play or movement if you grab the shaft near the bearing housing and move it? Thanks, Tim

There is some rubber around the bearing itself, to isolate it from the frame. As long as the bearing is on the shaft tight, and the bracket is good and tight, I wouldnt worry about it. SO, some up and down movement if you, say, grab the driveshaft and go up and down with it, is normal.

Went through this on a cheby pickup. If the rubber is just worn and the bearing still turns ok you can run it for a while. What happens lots of times though is that the bearing starts to turn hard and spins in the rubber holder. This then erodes the rubber and makes it lose in there. Check it over and see what you find.

On the chevy gasser it was quiet enough that I could hear the bearing was dry out he sliding rear window while driving.

Thanks. It's tight to the shaft- no play at all. I put a short strip of hard rubber between the u-bracket and the rubber of the bearing mount so it's firm. It just diddn't seem right to have that much play in it.

I had that bearing seize against the driveshaft on my 90. The rubber tore and it spun inside the carrier. Made the most awful sound I'd ever heard. I thought it was the rear end going. Spent a lot of time looking at everything but the bearing. Never occured to me that it could have been the problem. Not sure why they didn't put a grease fitting on it, but after changing it, I never had another problem with it.
