Hey All,

I have a '01 Cummins QC Long Bed HO 6-speed with 37K miles on it and the bearing has gone out. One, is there anyone out there this has happened to?

Are there any alternatives to the factory bearing that hold up better than the rubber one?

Thanks,

Ashley Holgate

Mine went out when the truck was almost new. Dealer replaced the entire drive shaft assy. under warranty. No problems since. Symptoms were clunking sound when I would start out from dead start. I have pics, but but can't find them now.

carrier bearing

Yup, mine died @12k mi. Its symptoms were a high pitched chirp that changed in frequency with speed (sounded like metal on metal)

on mine, the rear slip joint kept binding and pushing forward, (went threw 3 bearrings) u can buy the bearring threw spicer at local parts store, but the bearring and rubber holder have to be put in your dodge metal holder. Anyway, i finally fixed the problem, i welded the cap on the end of the front slip joint and put some washers (shims) inside the yoke so it was impossible for the driveline to move forward. Note. u can only do this to the front yoke, lol.

Happened to me in truckee california the end of last june. I was one hundred miles from home, hauling horses late on saturday night. Well I didn't know what had happened but with my guages and all I knew it wasn't too major. I drove her home, however it did cost me my bd engine brake and bounced around like a I don't know what.

I figured it was easier to drive home than to worry about getting picked up with horses and all.

We figured the reason it broke was because the grease failed to lubricate good and there fore dropped a bearing. We just had it rebuilt with heavy duty and all kinds of exterior grease zerk fittings.

a question for those of you that have messed with the carrier bearing. Could it be possible to drill and tap a grease zert fitting into the carrier so we can grease it now and again??? Kevin

Ford's permanent solution to carrier bearing failures on high torque trucks was to change the two piece driveshaft for a beefy one piece unit eliminating the carrier bearing. I would do the same if I was out of warranty. The problem isn't so much grease but the fact that in high torque situations the two piece driveshaft is forced sideways. Many times the two piece unit can be noisy at certain rpms/loads even though nothing is wrong with it.

nope, it would be too long. I was going to go that rout, but the tube would have to be 4" and u could only drive 2500 RPM in high gear. This is in a long bed quad cab though, shorter vehicle may work.
