A friend of mine has had his head ceramic coated on the exterior. Mostly a looks thing, but is pushing on to have it coated on the inside too after the valves, decking and porting are done. We've heard all the talk about the coating coming off and eating a turbo, etc. Not likely based on current uses of ceramic. The question is whether or not any of you have coated the inside of the head or found ceramic-coated pistons for the engine. Ceramic-coated pistons are not an option from Cummins as far as we can tell.

There is debate as to whether or not the intake side gets done, but the intake is not the focus in our case. The primary objective is to increase flow on the exhaust side and reduce the rate of heat absorption into the head. We are fully aware that the chance of noticeable impact on parameters is slim.

Anyone?

As far as I know, the only option on pistons are alloy pistons with teflon coatings on the piston skirts. Don't do anything to the combustion fire deck.

Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh does ion bonding of pistons along with Teflon coating. Ion bonding is an improved ceramic coating process as I understand it, there web site is; http://www.dieselinjection.net/

Give them a call; I’m sure they can answer all your questions.

Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh are the guys to talk to. For common engines, they have pistons in stock that are ceramic/telfon coated. Since our engine is not a common use for this technology, you will have to buy a new set of pistons and have them done. The last time I did a not so common engine, it took almost 1 month to get the pistons. THis may have been a rarity, but I do not know for sure. Give them a call. Nice people!

Okay I do this process on our race engines. Motorcycles 2/4 stroke 1-4 piston engines. Company is Polymer Dynamics in Houston number is (713)694-3296. We have them coat skirts and piston crowns along with rocker arms and cams. The process has dropped oil temps as much as 20 degrees. The compression is not as high as on diesel but it is 13. 5-14 to 1 non turbo. I would contact them they know their stuff mainly work on aviation and large machinary applications but turnaround is quick 1-2 weeks and price is good about 30 a piston for skirts and crown.

When I rebuild motor I will have this done to my Cummins.

P. S. you can do used pistons also

Dan... . as for getting pointed in the right direction on the ceramic coating pistons and heads... call either Dave Mitchell or Columbus Diesel Injection they do alot of pulling tractor work. Dave Mitchell's number is 1-740-246-6329 Enterprise Engine Performance, Dave has his engine done and he'd tell ya were the best place to get it done is, and he'd tell ya what to do and what not to do..... Thanks. Be good

You guys have provided exactly what we were looking for. I appreciate your time. We will contact all of the above. Every day is an education. We'll let you know what we do and how it turns out. Thanks again.

P. S. We'd taken so much grief from so many people about the worthiness of our endeavor that to avoid any extra flack I wrote that we didn't expect much in the way of results. Thanks to you guys we've found that Gary's ideas were on track and that we can expect significant results from the effort. This has been Gary Verheyden's deal. He's the one hell bent on getting it done even if it means sending parts to Houston. We'll keep you posted.
