I picked up a 2004 3500 SRW 4X4 That will be used extensively off road what Automatic transmission upgrades would you suggest the truck has 78K on the dial. Might even put a plow on the nose of the wagon.

Thanks BIG

Don't put a tight torque converter in it. Tight torque converters an off road low range are a bad combo, engine over powers brakes. Snoking

A good TC from Goerends, the 900/400 is not too bad at all and puts the power thru without a lot of pull on the brakes, a shift kit and the typical upgrade stuff like band strut, anchor and accumulator. If you are going to use it hard then a rebuild with Raybestos HE clutches at some point would be in the works. If you are doing a lot of slow heavy work remove the check ball in cooler output line and add an external cooler with a fan.

That would be my choices along with some 18" rims and good MT tires.

Why would you recommend 18" rims over 17" when the 17" tires are generally cheaper and a tire like the Toyo M/T's have a very high weight rating? Just curious.

Not any more they don't, all the 17's are now only rated at 3190 lbs. The 18 and 20 inch tires have a much better heavy duty selection as they now standard equipment. The 20's take a bit taller tire to get a decent sidewall height that for an auto might not be the best choice. The 18's have a wide range of sizes with weights up to almost 4000 lbs per tire.
