Woodcutter's chaps

Check out http://www.sportys.com for their "Woodcutters Chaps - used by the U. S. Forest Service". It's part number 6535T, and they go for $99. 95. Look pretty good, though I use my Carharts when I'm a cuttin'...

Out here in my neck of the woods, there's a forestry supply store, Terra Tech. the website is http://www.terratech.net. You can order direct. Labonville is an excellent brand of chaps. They run $68-72 a pr. 3 layers of kevlar. They're great.

:D Chaps! We dont need no stinkin CHAPS!:D Oh sh**! Is that my knee I just cut!

Maybe I better look into a pair myself. One cut up leg is enough for me.

8 lucky stitches made me a beliver last night. I noticed the national average of stitches for a chainsaw injury is 110!!! And $5600 for medical bills!

So 8 is definately a scratch. I have always felt that with a chainsaw, it going to be WHEN, not if you are going to get cut. There are just too many variables. Not exactly the ideal working conditions.

Can't believe Doc has not chimed in here yet?!?!!?

Got one cut above my knee from wearing the wrong shoes. (Slippery) Another on my left hand between my thumb and index finger. That was from working to close to someone else. He had the saw. Same thing happened to a friend working with his father. I know of one man who died when his saw kicked up and hit him in the forehead. Gotta respect these things!

Wow... After years of chainsaw use, I have never used chaps, nor did my dad - who logged for decades. I saw guys use them, but for what I did, I considered them a safety hazard, rather than a help. Just too much stuff to get caught on...

The only chainsaw injuries I was ever an observer to were always arm or hand. Oh, yeah, and a few cuts from filing the darn things...

I'm sure I've seen chaps in the Northern Hydraulics catalog, try www.northern.com. Probably about $100 but worth it: cheaper than the emergency room bill, and you won't have that painful 6 hour wait on a holiday weekend!! Now, if I could only get people to stop usin' scissors to cut their pet's hair! (ears, snouts, tails, you name it!!!) ;)

Shearing Sheep in Wolves Clothing w/o scissors

Hey DD, I have a professional groomer come by once a year to shear my Lupine pack ($25 per). It really helps them cope with the high heat and humidity down here, and it eliminates heavy matting of the undercoat and hotspots. Give the skin a chance to breathe. ;) I know some will flame me for that statement but in this case it is true.

Noise

The biggest injury to an experienced chain saw operater sneaks up on him.

I cut trees down with a chain saw for years and years. One day while walking back to my skidder I watched a bird on a limb just over my head singing away. But I couldn't hear it. I always wore ear plugs, but a doctor told me I should have worn muffs, because the sound was transmitted to my ear through a bone right behind my ear. Who was I to argue, I was stone deaf in that ear.

It is my right ear. The muffler pointed at the ground when falling trees and the sound bounced back to that bone and that ear is history.
