Thanks, TDR Staff

Competition Looks like the ricer's r catching up..

Competition My first pull Sat nite...Need TIPS!

I have a 2002 HO Cummins, 6-spd, 4x4, QC, LB Ram, w/ DDIIIs, PDR HX-40, Drag Comp, ATS Exh. Man, 4" Exh, Scotty II, with about 450hp, and 1000lb/ft, Con FE Clutch, 241HD T-Case, 3. 54 gears, and 315/75/16 BFG A/T tires.

One of my supervisors at work has been talking it up about how his Ford can outpull my Dodge, and Dodge this, and Dodge that, etc. , for the last few weeks, and since then, it has become a big issue at work, and a lot of people want us to hook up a chain to each other, and pulloff against each other, including him. He's still talking it up, and most of my coworkers would love to see me out pull him, and shut him up once and for all (he's a big guy, with a big mouth, and a big ego).

He has a 2001 Ford 7. 3 PSD Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 Automatic truck. He has about 285/75/16 BFG A/T tires on it, and the engine may be chipped, but I'm not sure. He has no gauges, yet he claims it's bombed, so I would assume that it's simply chipped. Also, I think he has 3. 73 gears.

I understand that there are many issues involved, including power, traction, and safety.

I can get a big chain, and something to cover it and hold it down if it does break. What kind of hitch or method of attachmennt should I use? I have a Class V Tow Hitch on the truck right now.

I can either weigh my truck down at least 2k lbs with flat cinder blocks, or wet sand or rocks. It must fit under my roll lock topper though, and not be impossible to clean up. Any other cheap ideas?

The things that worry me are the fact that he has an auto. I do not want to have to shift, as I lose all boost very fast with the PDR HX-40, and the 6-spd is a slow shifter, so that combination could let him pull me if I had to shift. I am not sure if I should use 4-low or not, or even 4-high, or even 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear, dump the clutch, or slip it. What's the best combination for me? (also that won't blow apart my drivetrain, or send my egt's through the roof, considering all the factors given)

Any other hints/suggestions/ideas that would help?

Thanks guys,

Skyler

I wouldn't do it. He has an older truck and is a bigger fool, so he has less to loose. :D Is your ego big enough to get into a pi$$ing contest with this guy and potentially mess up your new truck? If you win, what do you get? Not much. (I doubt it would shut him up if that's what you are hoping for)

I'm not a puller, but without traction bars there's a good chance you'll end up bouncing.

As you read my reply, keep in mind that I'm not a very smart guy.

I had a roomate in college that made it a daily ritual to tell me how his ford could pull my dodge. (this was before I had the cummins) He had a F150 reg cab long bed, and I had a Dodge 1500 reg cab long bed. Both were 4wd. I tolerated it for a while, but was really getting sick of hearing him talk. One day he had a bunch of friends over and started up with his usual trash talking and I called him on it. To make a long story short, We hooked up bumper to bumper on dry pavement in 4wd. I pulled him backwards about 60ft until he quit and all our friends saw it. He never said another thing about his ford again.

I say go for it. If you hook up on pavement, I would think you could just use 4low and 1st or 2nd and walk right off with him. My brother in law had a 98. 5 w/ 5spd and 3. 54's and I once saw that truck spin all 4 tires on dry concrete idling in 4low, 1st. He was trying to get a tree out of his front yard. If you are heavier and make your attachment point higher than his, you should be able to pull him no problem.

That's my opinion, doesn't mean it's good advice.

Chris

All you got to do to win is hold the brake and let him pull first. After his tires bust loose, you can pull him all over the place. Or just sit there with the brake on and make him look real stupid for a while, and say he cant even roll it backwards! Then pull him away!

Honestly, I wouldn't do it. But my sources say the above works!

What ever you do, don't do it! Now that that's out of the way, after you whoop his a$$, and you will, we all want video!

KK

You definitely have him out powered, BUT he has a longer wheelbase which is not in your favor. He has less power and better traction which will allow him to pull you when you spin, then it's all over at that point. Adding weight could help but he is heavier stock and that long wheelbase is tough to beat. Good Luck Though. Fred

OK, if you really want to embarrass him, do the following:

1. rent two car trailers that are identical from a uhaul dealer.

2. put two fairly identical weight cars on the trailers.

3. fill the passenger/back seats up in your quad cab and his crew cab with co-workers(witnesses)

4. head for a tall incline.

5. Start out side by side at the bottom to see who can make it to the top first with an equal amount of weight.

To top off the bet and rub in the humiliation, make the loser pay the trailer rental.

OK, if you're dead set on showing this guy how smart he is, NOT. Do this, go to the local metal supply house, tell them you want to borrow a 1"x4'x8' piece of plate steel. It will weigh 40lbs per sq. ft. or 1,280 lbs. Put this in the bed of your truck and cover it with a bed mat, then wear his a## out.

pull off

keep it in high range, 1st gear. Hold the brakes, and wait until he spins his tires then you can pull him all day long.

Skyler,

I reccomend that you not do it. The pull off up a hill sounds better to me... Maybe use Turnagain Pass... heheeh

On a side note, we have a small somewhat organized group of TDR memebers here in the Anchorage area. You would be more than welcome to join the group. . Shoot me a pm or email and I can give you the details.

By the way, nice mods on the truck... very similar to what I have done. .

Hook'm up! I'd use a strap. The straps I've broken haven't come appart as hard or as fast as the chain I broke. The strap did no paint or sheet metal damage. The chain... well it dented the hood about 12 times, went THROUGH the windshield and dented the dash. Put something over the strap anyway. I'd hook it to the 5th wheel hitch if you can... . hehe... . if you don't have one, hook to the trailer hitch as close to the other truck as possible. I have an auto... so I'm not sure what stratagy to use with the manual. Good luck! Post pictures!

PHYSICS!!!

Either truck has enough power to pull the other guy, but it's not a factor of power.

The heavier truck will most likely win on dry pavement. Also check the attachment height. If there are no "rules", then yeah definitely load your truck up with weight, a couple of 1/2" steel plates in the back will help lots, and nobody will call foul.

If his attachment point is higher than yours, or he weighs more, then you are going to have trouble. the higher attachment point will tend to lift the rear tires of the lower vehicle. If he weighs more, then all he has to do is sit there. You won't be able to move him no matter what kind of powerplant you have.

I've done this before, on dry clean pavement weight is #1 factor. Then just make sure you don't spin your tires. If you can do that, and weigh more, and have a higher attatchment point, my money's on you.

True power is pulling a large object up a steep hill. I would hook up something that weighs about 15,000 pounds and that auto. will just puke. :D You could use the same trailer and just time three runs each and see who wins. It is much more fun to be side by side and then pull away. Then there will be no excuses, just who has the most power.

I agree with Jtroiano. If you want to compare power, time a 1/4 mile pulling 15,000 pounds. If you want a show, then chain them up. Just remember that most insurance policies don't cover manhood size competitions. :{

SLEDPULL!!!

I don't like the chain thing at all--specially on dry pavement--not that you have a lot of that in AK.

Surely to heck there's a truck/tractor pull somewhere ya'll can go to. Then you can embarass his butt in front of a large crowd. Call it a grudge match--that might get the safety rules relaxed. Talk it up, video it--have fun.

Or like the others suggest, hook to a trailer with a backhoe on it and climb a hill.

Then drag race him.

After the dyno run Saturday, I got to run the hottest PSD I've seen yet. It was the dyno operators ride. There was no trash talking, he knew what I had--and if I could have gotten off the freakin' line it would have been a tie. It was a dead heat after all my wheel spinnin'. And that's with only 343HP. 450 and I would have reeled him in like a small fish.

I know this is cheating and all but well I was in a hurry and needed to just shut this Chevy Driver up. I hooked hitch to hitch with a strap which I agree is the safest of the many as it absorbs the shock within itself. after he was ready to roll and all I used 4H as 4L is way to low and will yeild nothing. The trick I used though was once we were in our trucks I hit the airbag inflate switch and raised my A$$ of the truck about 4 inches and that was the end of that; instant tow truck... . Good part was he had enough tire spin to actually think he was doing something. Now I know this is cheating and all but you know sometimes in a hurry you have to do what you have to do and I never heard another word about it. The most fun I had though was at work we had a large dirt mud hole next to our building that 4 wheelers and what not would play in. I towed out probaly 4 or 5 Chevy's and jeeps that would get stuck; but the coolest was when I pulled out a fully loaded bob tail truck (he had our conrete furniture in it and was not paying attention). One guy I worked with said his Chevy could pull it out and so got stuck, but then his loud mouth buddy with a Ford tried pulling him out and got stuck, then I got in there sank about a foot and made a huge mess pulled all 3 out (not at once). Like many said it is all about weight and traction in this instance the weight yeilded traction and therby I got the job done not to say the edge on 3 did not make it more fun and smokey hehehe I had a huge crowd outside for that one that was fun... .
