FASS - Apology to Diesel Dan

Injector Recommendations

I'm posting this as an "ah-ha" type of thread, not one to start a war about why/why not to buy a (insert favorite brand here).

I drained the WS and changed the HF6604 on my FASS this weekend, had some issues, and decided to post my solutions to make someone else's life easier... and these might even have some bearing on the other brands using canister type filters...

First... removing the drain plug from the WS is the only way to get all the water out of it... there are two sets of threads on the plug, one near the thumb hold and the other about an inch up the stem (looks like a hollow bolt). I got another cup of water out of the WS by removing the plug... along with a bunch of dirt... to date (in the past 2 weeks) I have drained almost 2 quarts of water from my WS...

After draining the WS, I decided to prime the FASS, then replace the HF6604... the FASS would not reprime, even after several attempts...

I then removed the HF6604 that has been on the unit for the last 40k (I have over 50k on the FASS)... I broke a strap wrench (and severly crushed the filter) trying to get it off... I finally used this coil spring looking filter wrench and twisted it right off...

Replaced the HF6604 and re-attempted to prime the FASS... still would not reprime. So I took the checkball out of the return line (the only thing that should hold any pressure on the system)... the FASS reprimed in under 5 seconds. So remember that tidbit, remove the checkball from the return line if you have priming issues. Replaced the checkball and back to normal...

I also took the HF6604 and cut it apart, the HF6604 had 40k on it. What I found shocked me... water. There was approximately a teaspoon of water in the bottom of the particulate filer along with a bunch of dirt and skunky looking fuel... the filter media looked fine and I had been having zero problems with this filter (just figured it was due for a change). The water in this filter could have been from the slug of water I got two weeks ago, and was nowhere near being picked up by the outlet tube... the filter would probably hold a cup or more of water before the water would get to the pickup tube... and again, I think this water was partially (if not completely) from that slug I picked up in Spiceland, IN. And this was the HF6604, not the WS...

So keep this in mind when thinking about extended runs on these types of filters (I believe this holds for the glacier, Airdog, and FASS owners)... while the filter might be capable of a lot more than 50k, you might run the chance of sucking water into the engine. I would at least keep that in the back of your mind and weigh that with the amount of water you get from your WS... I had routinely gotten almost zero water for a year, then got my slug two weeks ago... that might be where all my water came from...

steved, Was that a Flying J that you got the water from? I've used that truck stop on 3 trips to Colorado without any problems. Jeff

Yes, a Flying J...

I should have known better when all the car pumps except diesel were closed...

Thanks for the info. I drained my WS and switched to HF6604 at about 20,000 miles on my FASS. I will just plan on changing filters about every 25,000 miles, or about yearly for me. Just factor it in the yearly maintenance cost and not have to worry. I did not have any trouble priming the system after the filter change. I will have to do the WS again the way you did next time. I did not have any water at all the first time.

I should also add that in over 600k combined driving on 4 trucks, this was the first time I ever got water...

It can and does happen quickly... I was just lucky to catch it when I did...

I also drive cross country on a quarterly basis and use multiple places for fuel... I have sorta eliminated Flying J (after this water incident), Sunoco (a lot of sand in my filter), and Loves (sand and a little water in my filter) from my stops... While usually slightly higher in price, the T/A's, Petro's, and Pilot's seem to have a better quality fuel IMO (for truck stops)... I also like Sheetz and Shell fuel for the smaller stops.
