Hi all, Pretty new to the cummins motor. I have a 1999 with 65k miles on it. Ive owned it a couple years, but never done any work on it myself. I changed the fuel filter for the first time today (shop always done it before). I bumped the motor about 4 -5 times and can hear the fuel pump going and then it stops. I then went for start and it fired up for about 4 seconds and died. After that no matter how many times I bump the motor, it will just turn over and no fire. I am seeing a little smoke out of the exhaust pipe. I pull the top fitting off the filter housing and fuel spit out of the hole (what a mess!). Am I just not fully priming the system? Did a quick search of the forums and could not find anything. Going back to searching now, but figured I post real fast.

You had air locked the injection pump.

If you don't crack open the feed line to the VP when you prime the filter, all the air in the filter housing goes to the injection pump, and gets trapped there.
