Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) How bad is to be?

used the delo 400 15w40. i can tell you that if for no other reason, i will continue to use this oil due to the little pull tab on the seal !! no more worrying about that foil going down the oil fill tube!

ps. i need to make a blow by bottle. it's seems to be getting oily in that vicinity. does anyone know what size bottle will fit on that tube?

thanks. scott.

Scott a bottle will make just as much mess. Best bet is to extend your tube down to about 8" off the ground, oil will hit the pavement rather than the bottom of your truck. I just slipped on a hose with the same inside diameter as the outside of the stock hose, no connectors or clamps. Figured it could come off easy if it ever caught on anything, it hasn't for six years.

Has anyone looked into that device that does away with the tube and sort of seals up the crankcase? I think it's called a Airsep or something like that. It's used in boats alot so as to not have that mess in the bilge and potentially pumping that overboard and polluting.

vc

The Airseps work great but their price is very hard to justify. The best application for them is for folks who operate their trucks on very steep slopes where oil spills out the blowby.

What I do not understand about the Airsep is a question that comes to mind when we all get into the mildly heated flame shorts on air filters. What good is a Airsep, since we all know it recycles the crankcase breather fumes(containing oils & vapor),when owners get all freaky about a overoiled foam air filter and the mess that happens inside the turbo.

Why not just evac it into the exhaust like a race header or use a small vacum pump and a tank vented at the top??. It would certainly be more efficent and not allow a mess to form anywhere. Just my . 02... ..... Andy

Andy, there was a thread, unfortunately in 24 valve where stupid pump guys don't go, about plumbing the blowby into the exhaust. A few folks have done it by welding a smaller pipe fitting into the exhaust pipe post muffler and connecting to the blowby with high temp hose. You have to use a check (one way) valve to prevent exhaust pressure, which at times can overpower the blowby pressure from feeding back.

$900 - ouch!! Too rich for me.

How about that exhaust deal - have you heard if it worked good or not, and did the oil going into the exhaust stream burn up or is it pooling up in the muffler or in my case a cat that lost a few pounds?

vc

The guys who have done say it works great. The blowby is dumped in past the cat and muffler so no plugging takes place there.

... ... ... and not one comment about the neat little pull tab on the delo bottle... ... i guess that's why everyone else uses delo!

Oh yeah, great reason to use an oil! About as much sense as Pennzoil's new easy grip handle on their synthetic car oil. Another good reason to use an oil!

Jeezus, if a DIYer is not responsible enough to remove a foil seal, are they really qualified to be changing their own oil?

Slow down, take your time, and develop a system that eliminates stupid mistakes. If I'm using quart bottles, I remove the cap, remove the seal and put it in the cap, then pour the oil. My safety check is placing the foil seal in the removed cap BEFORE I pour the oil into the engine.

But, hey, the pull tabs are great if you like the oil. I just use a small knife or screwdriver. Jeez we Americans are getting lazy!

I "directed" my blowby tube to hit the U-Joint on the axle. . I figured extra lubrication... What can it hurt? what do ya all think??

Dave

Bill......

... . my fist thought was that he directed it to the front joint on the driveline coming from the transfer case. I, for one, am curious how this little experiment will turn out.

Anything that is done to one of these products, like the pull tab, to make it so fewer people make simple mistakes is a good thing in the long run, IMO. Our lives all seem toooooo complicated now anyway.

that's right, redrum... ...

i don't like getting my pocket knife out every time and cutting out the foil tops of the valvoline... . pain in my a!@... .

so, i'll use the delo. :D

p. s.....

you see redrum... ... . i pop quite a few of the tops. i change mine every 4000 mi.

i've went 2000mi since this post started..... how about you? do you put 40k mi a year on yours?

I'm right there with you on the foil seals Shendren. What a collosal PITA. Delo uses pull-tabs eh? I wondered why they oil companies weren't using the pull-tabs like the old milk bottles had.

Some of the products have the sticker on so tight you can't get the shreds off the rim hardly at all. After the stories on here about blocked cooling nozzles and such, my paranoia level is high enough I want every scrap off. And every time I stand there whittling away at a bottle of freakin' oil, I think to myself &^%$!!! the &*^%!! who tamper with products and drive the need for this sort of crap to start with. Kinda harsh to have a 1,000 pound motor built of cast iron, laid low by a tiny scrap of foil you can barely see.

I'd switch from Rotella to Delo, but I am now addicted to that skunky smell... like living in San Antonio again and smelling a whole roomful of Coronas being opened (known as the "skunk whiz" of beer once upon a time)
