Well after listening to everyone and looking it over, I finally replaced the axle lube today. The worst part - definately getting ther original silicone to let go  I was a little disappointed to see that DC got away from using a gasket, but I see why. There is very little sealing area "inside" the bolt holes.

I used Royal Purple Max-Gear 85W140 for replacement. Now, if only that silicone would cure faster :D

there are two things you can do to solve your silcone curing issue.

1) (and the best) get a maghytec pan. this way you never have to take it off again.

2) there is a black RTV , Permatex makes it, called "The Right Stuff". It's considered a gasket maker and once put together can be put into service right away.

I changed the Dana 80 for the first time last week and was amazed how simple it was. After scraping, the metal cleaned up great with some brake cleaner and the black silicone was awesome. I let it dry 24 hrs. before putting in the mobil 1. threw in a bottle of OEM friction modifier just in case.

I agree on using The Right Stuff, I use it for almost all gaskets and it performs wonderfully. If you don't want to buy the Mag diff cover or take the cover off to change the lube you might consider the Mighty Vac Fluid Evacuator. You run the hose down into the diff, pump it a few times and walk away. The vacuum sucks the lube out with out any work hardly at all. They are also good for draining radiators and other things without making a mess.
