Pinion yoke change question

I changed out the rear seal transmission in my 91 with the Getrag. I tightened the nut back up, with locktite on it and now the yoke will not turn unless I back off the nut a little, which means it's no longer tight, much less the 280-300 ftlbs torque spec.

While I was in there I pulled the spacer sleeve out and the speedo gear, to inspect it, as the little gear coming of from the side is trashed. I put the gear and spacer back in like I found them then tightened the heck out of the yoke nut with my impact. Everything seemed OK until I tried to turn the yoke (no, the transmission is not in gear).

One thing to mention here is that when I pulled it apart the rear seal on the transmission was MIA. There was NO seal in there at all. The seal the seller gave me when I bought the truck was not right, as it is for a slip-yoke, like an automatic, 2wd has.

I found the correct seal by searching rockauto.com, as the local auto parts stores do not have a listing for a Getrag transmission. The seal I put in sits flush with the end of the tailshaft.

I installed the Napa seal, but here are the PNs I used:

BCA number: 471424

Napa PN: 19762

Any ideas as to what's wrong with my yoke, or transmission?

Thanks,

Chris

This has me stumped. If your bearing preload was WAY too tight, it wouldnt turn any time. The center of the rear bearing butts against the mainshaft, then the speedo gear and spacers & yoke butt against each other, so you never affect the preload.

What kind of torque does your impact make? If it's a 500ft-lb model, it may just be going too far. Try a pipe wrench and a torque wrench. That is the only thing I can think of. How far do you back it off before the yoke will turn?

Think I have it fixed. Ripped the new seal out and measured the depth of the seat for the seal, . 400". The seal is about . 315 thick, so I decided to press it in further. Bought another new seal and drove it in as far as I could, and it worked. Tightened the nut and the yoke is "snug" but turns OK by hand.

Usually the seat is just enough for the seal to fit into, which is what got me, because I only drove it in flush with the end of the tail shaft.

Thanks,

Chris

That would do it. Normally, you have a shoulder that the seal seats on. At least that's how I do axle and pinion/ diff seals.
