2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Changing air filter

Question guys. A friend of mine tells me this story. He has a friend with a duramax. The friend with the duramax changes his air filter to a free flowing filter and housing setup like the k&n but I didnt catch the brand. He shortly thereafter removes the setup because his "turbo was getting too hot". What would cause an increase in EGTs? I thought about it and couldnt answer it. It didnt seem logical that more cool air would raise temps. Unless the air wasnt cooler but hotter like right off the engine instead of outside air drawn in.

Maybe he was running open element without a heat shield of some sort. More air is good but more hot air isn't.
