Is it really necessary to pull the front timing cover to change the front seal on a 97 12V. Cummins insight says yes and 6 hrs. ??? No roundabouts on this one?

Yes. There is a rolled edge on the front of the gear housing cover that the seal resides in. the seal can only be installed from the backside if done properly.

Okay, Thanks guys. Almost 1,000,000km on the old girl and she decided to start puking oil out the front seal . KDP never done as mirror inspection showed it had fallen out (years ago).

There is almost 600,000km on first rebuild of orig 47RE and the body is getting pretty rough. Just waiting for the final major thing to have to pull her off the road.

Still runs like a clock and starts instantly... ... .

I had the front cover pulled, seal installed and put back together in 1 1/2 hours. I have done it 3 times so I have had practice but I still don't think it was more than 3 hours when I did the first one. It is easy to do in your driveway with basic tools. I would not pay a shop more than 2-3 hours
