Changing gear lube?

I am going to be changing my gear lube and going with Amsoil 75w90 in both axles and am wondering if there are any helpful hints. I am going to pull the cover so I can look around in there and clean it out. What does a guy use to seal the cover back on? (is there a gasket?) Also, what are the torque specs for the cover bolts. No gasket, I belive all you need is some blue goo. I have to look up torque or you can try archives( search mode).

rmk,the only way to drain the fluid is to take off the covers,it's a good idea to jack one side of the truck at a time to help the oil drain from the ends. Do the drain after driving or when it's hot out to help speed things along. Any type of silicone gasket eliminator will work fine,no gasket is needed. Don't over-apply the sealant as some of the squish out may end up inside the differentials.

There is no gasket from the factory, just RTV silicone. I use a gasket when I change mine, but most guys don't. I don't know the torque specs, just snug them tight with a 3/8" drive.

As far are helpful hints, hmmm... are they any? Oh yes prop one side up at a time to allow the fluid to drain out of both axle tubes.

I use Permatex "Ultra Black" RTV silicone to seal the covers. Torque specs are as follows:
-Fill hole plug: 25 ft lbs (34 Nm)

-Cover bolts: 35 ft lbs (47 Nm).

As far as I know the type of silcone you should use is ultra grey rtv. It is "sensor-safe" because you have a sensor in the rear end that can get messed up if the wrong kind of silicone is used. Good luck.

There is a gasket for the rear end, don't have the part number, but my dealer ordered several for me when I first bought the truck. It sure beats the silicone mess and I haven't had any leak problems as long as you apply the proper torque.

When you pull cover off, drill a hole in the lowest part, & put in a magnetized drain plug. You can change it more often & not have to mess with the cover. I drilled an 11/16" hole in mine, and brazed in a 3/8" pipe coupling sawed in half to reduce it's length. Put a magnetized pipe plug in it. (Poor man's Mag-Hytech or whatever)

Does your truck have a limited-slip, locking type differential? If so be sure to put the additive in from Dodge to prevent chatter from the clutch plates. Good luck.

Mop out the diff so more oil won't drool onto the gasket surface before you get it buttoned up. Clean the gasket surfaces with lacquer thinner before putting on a thin coat of RTV. The sensor is magnetic induction, not an O2 sensor, so the type of RTV desn't matter.
