I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have been to 2 different Dodge dealers and get two different answers. I have an 03 Dodge dually, 6 speed, with a 3:73 gear. The housing is 11. 5 and limited slip differential. One dealer tells me that only ring and pinion gears are needed to change to 4:10. The other dealer said I would need to change ring and pinion gears plus the part that holds the ring gear. Ring and pinion gears cost approx. $500, labor $600. The other part can't remember what the part is called cost approx. $800. Has anyone changed from a 3:73 gear to 4:10 and what did you have to change?

If it's a 4WD, don't forget about the front.

On the 2nd gens, you had to change the carrier when you switched from 3. 54 to 4. 10. I don't know if that's the case for the 3rd gens or not.

All you have to change is the ring and pinion gears, and maybe the bearings depending on the miles on them. I had mine changed a little over a year ago,30000 miles on them and no problems. WILDMAN

Funny thing I was thinking about doing the same for my rig. Since I changed to 315's she is a little to tall geared for towing my TT.

Jim that price from the dealerships was that front and back?

I want to get rid of my 4. 10's if someone wants to trade!

Just curious as to why? I had thought about swapping to 4. 10's, but after I towed, the 3. 73s were fine.

I'm curious too! Looks to me like you have the perfect tow truck. The Cummins likes low to mid rpm's and high gears. Use that awesome 6-spd. you will like it!!

The reason for the gear change from 3:73 to 4:10 is I need the combined gross vehicle weight that the 4:10 gear has which is 23,000 lbs. The 3:73 gear is 21,000 lbs. Thanks for all the info.

I keep looking for another gear!I drive on the Fwy. a lot and at 75 it is taching to much and kills the milage. If you drive any slower you will get ran over!

You want to go through all this trouble just to gain 2000 lbs in GCVW? Why are you even concerned about this? GCVW is just a number that Dodge makes up. If a 4. 10 geared Dodge is "rated" for 23,000lbs, the 3. 73 geared truck can safely pull the same amount. The truck may have to work a little harder, but I sure the cooling system, transmission, axles, etc, can handle it. Just make sure you are not over your GVW of your truck and you been fine.

I would not change to 4:10 I am grossing 22,000 with my 2000 3500 5 speed and 3:55 gears no problem just use the gear shift when needed. My 2 cents

I would love to go to 4. 10's, but my 37's make my 3. 73's like a 2. 97 or something ridiculous like that. I think 4. 10's would be perfect for my setup, anyone want to trade??
