I am going to change the fluid today or tomorrow and have never done it before. I have not looked at the thing extensively but where do you drain it? Do you take off one of the PTO covers or does one of the bolts for the pto cover go all the way through and act as a drain?

Also exactly how much fluid does it hold?

Are there any tricks?

Thanks

Ted

Why do you want to change this fluid so soon? How many miles are on the vehicle. I thought I read somewhere that you change it at 100,000 mi. and it is a long interval because it is synthetic oil. Also it is supposed to be replaced with a Texaco brand type oil ( I would imagine from the dealer). It is stamped all over my case to use the appropriate texaco oil for warranty reasons.

You will want to remove one of the covers so you can clean the magnet that lays in the bottom of the case. Also it is a good idea to wipe out the 1/2 inch of oil that lays in the bottom of the trans. The magnet is just stuck to the bottom, remove, clean and put it back were it was. You can just remove the bottom bolt to drain, and refill if you want to. Thats better than not changing it at all. I've changed mine twice already ( 94,000 miles ) . The NV 5600 lube is the same lube the factory requires in the NV 3500 in the 1/2 tons. It is different than the lube in the NV 4500s. The NV 5600 is not expensive like the lube in the NV 4500s. The part number for the NV 5600 is 04874464. You will need 4 1/2 quarts to fill. With the fast coolers you would need almost 7 quarts to fill. I'm not sure how many miles you have on yours but I changed oil at 25,000 miles and again at 75,000. My miles were all towing grossing 26,000lbs.

I just passed 32k and the factory fill in the 5600 is not synthetic. I think I am going to use amsoil series 3000 5w30 in it. Seems like people with a few exceptions have had good results with the amsoil.

With the miles I have on the truck everything is getting changed. I did the axles last week and the transmission and tcase are up now.

Any tricks for the t-case??

Thanks

Ted

Verlyn, with your coolers do you run one on each side or just one?

Ted,

Transfer case is very easy. You'll need a 10mm allen wrench to remove the plug. Fill it back up with Dexron III ATF fluid. I used Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluild in mine...

Hi Ted, You run one on each side. They add 1 quart to each side.

It is amazing the owners manual says that the manual transmission does not require periodic changing. It also says to check the windshield washer fluid at regular intervals. ?????.

I think we should check or change the transmission oil at regular intervals, and not the windshield washer fluid.

I also changed my NV5600 fluid at about 28,000 miles, and went with the Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic engine oil, as per the recommendations of several TDR members. I tried like heck to track down the Texaco lube, but everyone from Texaco themselves on down to every distributor in CA either said it wasn't available in CA yet, or they had no reference in their catalogs because it is so new, and possibly a specialty lube just for Dodge... ... .

Anyway, it was very easy to change out. I didn't install a set of Verlyn's FastCoolers, but I will at the next change! Afterall, I remember seeing a thread that Piers was so impressed with their performance, that he now sells them from his shop.

Come now Verlyn, don't you know that old windshield washer fluid goes bad? :D Once you notice it, it's already too late! The bad stuff runs down the windshield, around the cowling and then down the firewall and eventually corrodes the muffler bearings. Now that transmission fluid is magical stuff, lasts forever, and looks just as good as the day it was put in  !
