Hi. I did read on TDR how to change out the little 6" coolant hose under the exhaust manifold on my 5.9 CTD engine. Mine isn't leaking but I'm anal enough to do it before it happens. Any ideas where an article is or tips on doing it? The tubes have welded nubs on them to line up things that make it hard to quick change out

. Please see my attached photo of the little silver covered tube. Do I need to drain some of my radiator before removal? Thanks, Herb

Draining it down is the right thing to do.If you pull the alternator out first you can move the front tube enough to change it out.If you pass on that route you can remove all the bolts from the rear tube(both sides of the engine)I f you ate your wheaties you can change it by tweaking the hose to snake it in.

PBar, I wondered the same thing. That little pipe looks silver for some reason. Like it has metallic covering on it. If it's a low failure hose I won't do it. I just don't want to be stranded by it.

I've been watching the one on my '07 also and I am planning on changing it out in the spring. It leaked for me when the truck was new and went years without issue after tightening it. I've had to tighten it twice now this winter.

It depends on the definition of failure. I have never seen one that fid any more than seep. The replacement hose has a slightly smaller id that adds to the install fun factor

Supposedly constant tension clamps are the solution to the leaks on these hoses. Especially the section by the oil filter.

I have never seen one "fail", they usually just weep/leak, especially when cold. They are a blast to change!

See TDR Issue 85, pages 22 and 23 including photos by sag2. :)

Yea, it's really the clamps that are the issue. But you have to take it apart to install the spring type clamp so you might as well change the hose at the same time.

It is not fun.
