Howdy all,

After searching all over the country, no one claims to be able to order the Texaco MTX1874 oil for the 6 speed transmission, except for distributors back east, and the shipping costs to CA would likely be as high as if I just went to the dealer and paid out the wazoo for it. That I will not do.

So, I am going to put Amsoil in the thing and go from there.

My questions are: How many quarts of fluid does the NV5600 hold (don't have my service manual handy to consult before I place my order)?

Also, I can't remember which Amsoil product people have said they use in the NV5600. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Have 22,500 miles on the truck, already using Amsoil in both differentials, so figure all moving parts are well broken in by now. Will be switching to Amsoil in the engine when the last of my stock piled Delo 400 runs out later this year.

Am also going to go with the filter kit from Geno's garage when I change the transmission fluid.

Thanks,

Tom

6 speed oil change

Tom,

I wouldn't use AMSOIL. I used the AMSOIL 5W-30 and in cold weather the transmission started a second to third gear chatter/clash when shifting. It stayed that way for 5K miles. Went to Dodge and bought five quarts of their oil and the problem went away. I know others who use AMSOIL with no complaints. The factory oil in the transmission is quite good. While your at it, add a oil filter from Geno's. They work great!! I even added a magnet inside the filter for even better protection.

Tom, you might want to just run down to the dealer and get the fluid from them. Its only $10. 50 + tax per quart and is what the transmission needs... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Pete

I have been running Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in my six-speed for the last twelve thousand miles. It shifts like a dream. I have had zero problems and have towed quite a bit during this time. It is quite convenient using the same lube in the transmission and the engine too. :) :)

I've been using the regular 5W-30, not the HDD, in mine since April and that's been almost 14k miles. Haven't had any cold weather to contend with yet but I don't forsee any problems based on the performance so far. I've heard some say that Amsoil caused problems shifting in this gear or that gear but its all the same lube everywhere in the trans isn't it? Can't comment on cold weather as I haven't seen any since I put it in there but living in Texas and being in Phoenix right now I think I've got the warm weather covered and its been fine. When it gets cooler back home I think I'll try the 5W-30 HDD to see how it does, specs show better wear protection. YMMV.

Texas Diesel, You already posted the info for the distributor in Killeen TX. Called them yesterday morning, guy I talked with remembered you. I asked him about shipping me a 5 gal. bucket to CA, he said he could, but shipping charges would be astonomical, and because CA has an extra bunch of enviro-nazi bull**** regs, there would be more "fees" and such added on, and it wouldn't be any cheaper than if I just went to Dodge and paid their sky high price for it. I really appreciate your help though.

I have a case of the Amsoil 5W-30 HDD on order, and am about to order the filter kit from Geno's this motning.

Thanks guys,

Tom
