I know that a few guys have had problems with the computer on the trucks that controls the charging system. The computer module may need to be checked. I hope someone with experience can help you. My alternator has a separate voltage regulator.

Also check the ground wire to the frame. If that gets loose, it can make a vehicle do strange things.

well, i called yesterday and ordered a service repair manual. was actually surprised, had to call chrysler and it runs 59. 95. not to bad for what you get, i hope. thanks for the input guys. i will try to track down my ground strap running to the frame and check that.

Best way to find this sort of charging problem is to check the alternator output with a volt meter. You shold see 13. 5 to 14. 75 volts across the battery if it is charging. If you only get the battery voltage, then its not charging. Next try the voltage across the alternator field windings,(the two smaller posts on the back of the alternator) with te engine running aprox. 8 to 9 volts should be present. If not check the feild terminal connected to positive (the one that goes to the auto shut down relay) should be battery voltage to ground. Next check the fuses, there is one 20 amp fuse ahead of the relay. The relay has been changed already so should be fine.
The auto shut down is controlled by the engine controller, as is the negative side of the field. Also check for damaged wiring especialy around the engine, some wires could be severed or shorted out. Whe your manual arrives You can check the wiring diagram and check each wire goig to the alternator for contnuity. Page 8A-19 of the manual has fault codes that may help as well.

hope this may help Neil

My son had this problem with his '92. Took it to a Dodge dealer to get it checked and they told him it needed some sort of charging system computer that was a little over $700. 00. A few days later, I was changing the valve cover gaskets and seen where a wiring harness just above the back valve cover that had came loose from the wiring harness loom. It had fallen down on the aluminum valve cover and worn some insulation off of it and was shorting out. I put on a new loom holder and no other problems have surfaced. It just pays to look it over sometimes before paying the price!

The voltage regulators usually only last about a year.

Do the 1993 trucks have seperate volatge regulators, or is it built into the alternator? I went to NAPA to get one and they said they don't show one listed for my truck. (1993 4x4 3/4 ton)
