The ammeter on occasion shows that the alternator is not charging. I have noticed this off and on for the last couple of weeks. ( once lights were a little dim) Does this alternator have some sort of voltage regulator, on it or is it built in. What is the best way to diagnose the problem and fix it . Truck is a 2001 with 40k. I take it the alternator is not covered in the 100 mile engine warranty or is it.

Does this occur when first starting on a cold morning?

Does it stabilize after the engine warms?

If so it's the grid heater in the air intake track pulling mucho amps.

It's like plugging a couple of toasters into the same electrical outlet.

This is normal for your Cummins.
