Charleston SC Smog rules??

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Calling all Duramax owners

Guys, I need your help turning up the juice on an ISC

Anyone in the Charleston SC area that can confirm what the diesel smog rules are?

My son just moved there and we will be driving his 03 out there which will get an SC registration.

Just curious if there are any tests, visual or otherwise.

Matt,

I live in SC about 40 miles from Charleston, we have no smog checks. To register a vehicle all you need insurance and proof of ownership. Goes for gassers and diesel.

I've been living in Charleston for almost 4 years now, never had a problem with a straight piped truck that occosionally blacksout the highway.

I live in charleston and we got rid of vehicle inspections years ago..... he will not have a problem unless he gives Mayor Riley a cloud of black smoke in his car window downtown one day... LOL

Thanks for the info, he had straight piped it but I will most likely put the muff back on for the trip and bring along the pipe.

SC sounds pretty laid back. I found out that OHV's don't need any kind of registration.

Also you can pay a 550. 00 fee to drive their roads with no insurance

Seems like that would make for some pretty high premiums for those that want insurance.

One more question for you SC folks. .

Any recommendations for a mini storage in the Goose Creek or N. Charleston SC area?

I am in CA now but will be out there next week.

A 5x10 would do with outside drive up access for future loading & unloading.

The closer to the Navy Base the better, Thanks.

Your going to pay out the Arse for a storage unit in the city, I'm renting a storage building out towards moncks corner for 70. 00 a month, it's a 10x20 room, they wanted 120+ in the "city" for one of similar size. Are you going to be at the naval base or out at the weapons station? I work for spawar out on the back side of the weapons station. Where I'm renting my storage building is about 30 minutes from the weapons station.

My son is stationed at the nuc training facility, I am bringing out his CTD and storage is for his motorcycle. I found a 10x10 @ 106. 00 per month in Goose Creek but would like to find something in the 60. 00 range.

I am sure he wouldn't mind driving a little further to save some bucks, he would probably only access the storage maybe once or twice per month.

WTF - sort of rule is that??????????????

problem is uninsured drivers... never heard you could drive without insurance here personally myself as it is required every time I go to register a vehicle or buy a vehicle... . but there are a lot of people that drive illegally without it... . so if they are at fault then your insurance has to pay the tab and us legal drivers end up with higher rates.

Only place I have lived that had higher insurance than SC is Wash DC... when I switched from State Farm to USAA (for military and their famlies) it almost cut my insurance in half. They now insure all my vehicles, my house, my motorcycle, etc... . plus my daughters and their families can use USAA for the rest of their lives as well... once I started the account myself.

Stay out of Noth Charleston!!=HOOD. I don`t know what kind of premiums you guy are paying ,but I have two 3500`s and a pop-up camper and I pay $94. 00 a month

Never heard of being allowed to register a vehicle here without insurance, I would double check that fact, if I were you. I lived in Redondo Beach, CA for 20+ years before moving here and my insurance premiums are lower here.

I read that info here, its posted about 3/4 way down the page.

Registering as an Uninsured Motorist

As of February 1, 1999 vehicle owners can pay a $550. 00 Uninsured Motorist Fee. The $550. 00 fee is not an insurance premium and the owner is not purchasing any insurance by paying this fee. The $550. 00 Uninsured Motorist Fee is for the privilege to drive and operate an uninsured motor vehicle on the South Carolina roads. Owners that pay the $550. 00 Uninsured Motorist Fee are liable for damages if they are at fault in an accident.

Maybe they changed it, I hope so. Several people on the Navy base advised our son to keep his Gieco insurance in CA cuz it will be way more in SC. His trouble is he is only 19. I guess you can do that cuz SC is not his permanent duty station.

Brock- Thanks for the USAA tip, our daughter is in the Coast Guard and tried them but they were more, even with her discount. I bet it has something to do with the age cuz she is only 22. Both kids have good records. Probably once her and our son are older USAA must be less. I will get Justin to check out USAA in SC anyway. Thanks

Woha!, don't want any of that HOOD stuff, thanks for that tip. What ins. co. do you have?

Not all of North Charleston is the hood, just certain areas of it. I live in NC right now while searching for a house to buy. I don't believe the rule of paying 550 for driving uninsured is correct, I know they charge enourmous fees to drivers if they let thier insurance lapse and don't renew it. That's in the several hunderd dollar range and they have to show proof of ins. when they register thier vehicle. They also have in force now where ins. companies have to electronically submit lapses and notices are sent to the individuals to verify that they have insurance, if they don't, they loose thier licesne I believe. Insurance is freaking expensive here, costs me 150 a month for full coverage on my truck and liability on my old jeep. Almost twice what I was paying in Oklahoma. Give Moncks Corner Storage a call, I don't have thier phone number here with me, but should be able to get it from directory assistance. The ones I'm using is out in the country, on highway 17, you have a pin number to get in the gate to the buildings. The nuc training facility is on the other side of the base from where I work, I work on the back side where the army depot is. The base is over 1800 acres I believe, with alot of forest and swamps in the middle. I'm using state farm here, they seem to be the cheapest around here, had Farm Bureau before I came out here, and they were much more expensive than state farm.

On another note, when are you heading out here? Maybe all the locals can get together and grab a meal somewhere. Anyone else up for it?

I should be there by the 10th and will only stay for 2 days then fly back. That would be fun to meet some other TDR folks for myself and for our son Justin, we are always interested in others rides and the mods everyone does.
