chat down 8-21-01 3:25pm

Ooooh, and the nwbombers chatroom is a REAL IRC SERVER!!! Yay! FINALLY! Not some Java piece of CRAP like that thing they insist on using here.

Show me the guy who uses a java applet for production business... . that is, communications you don't want to interrupt, and I'll show you someone who thinks that that word "reliability" is a slogan :)

:D

Sorry, Ken... sometimes I get a bit sarcastic :(

Rob, with that attitude, I'd love to take the chat down and say "tough cookies" but its not my decision.

Show me someone who runs IRC on their server and you've also shown me someone who doesn't care about keeping their server secure.

Sorry... but you catch more flies with honey.

I remember going out of my way back when the chat server was first introduced, going into a fair amount of detail about how an IRC chat server can be as secure as you want it to be... you just have to KNOW how to configure it. I offered my help, yet nobody took me up on it.

And the Java POS is still down a great deal of the time. I had thought about making constant posts about it being down, but I decided not to, because I didn't want to come off like a jerk, since I had been very vocal about the issue from the start. Then I saw the post from Power Wagon, announcing their IRC-based server, and I was very pleased about it.

So you wonder why I have an attitude about it? I dislike stuff that doesn't work, particularly when the Powers That Be take the stance of ignoring the problem and hoping it'll go away, even when help on the subject is offered by those with experience in that area.

With as much trouble as I've had with stuff related to my truck, vendors, and also the chatroom (about the only thing on TDR I still use), my patience is gone.

If you want to kill the chat server, it won't bother me one bit... it doesn't work anyway. The nwbombers.com chatroom is working wonderfully right now, and it won't take long before people start using it by default. You guys had the opportunity to fix the problem, and didn't.

I know how to configure IRC. But IRC is still VERY prone to security problems. Java chat is not the problem. The problem is that everytime I reboot the server the chat isn't restarted because I've been so busy I haven't had time to add it to the startup scripts.

I DON'T want your help, I don't want anyone having any information as to what's going on inside the server or how any of the applications (especially server apps) are configured unless you are paid to do so, again for security reasons. Additionally, I don't recall asking for anyone's assistance setting up IRC.

I can tell people how pleased I am about something without slamming others. How would you feel if I said I thought your truck was junk? Wouldn't go over very well, would it?

Ignoring it?

The powers that be are concentrating on writing a killer application for the TDR members. Something far better and more useful than chat. The powers that be spent a great deal of time (and money) researching and upgrading to a better server. The powers that be spent serious time tuning the database so it runns incredibly fast now. The powers that be have been working on shell scripts to handle backups in a pretty redundant manner. The powers that be have been working on applications to handle membership signups and terminations.

In other words, the powers that be have had me doing things, that people would raise cain about if I didn't handle them BEFORE I handled chat.

I come here, after spending half the day away from my business doing some work for TDR and see people throw the word "crap" and "pos" around about the work I've done.

So's mine.

You had an opportunity to post how pleased you are that you have IRC available without slamming my work and you didn't.

I invite you to stop by and check it out.

Probably not what you figured :)

I didn't want to start a fight. I was just letting the admin know it was down. Sometimes you get so busy you miss the little things!;)

I see alot of bickering going on in different forums about things that are not perfect or not fast enough or we are charged too much. I think we all need to slow down and enjoy what we have, sure maybe some other site might be better on one thing but this site HAS to be better on alot of other stuff! I see 35$ as a bargin!Back in 96" I paid 35$ a year and it's still the same price when EVERTHING has gone up! I"ll put up with some inconviences for everthing else that I"m am getting here. Remember, Ken put's in another part day when the first whole day is done- I can relate to that. I don't want to take sides or make ANYONE mad, just remember this is here to enjoy and talk to others so lets take advantage of what we do have, like stakeman said he was just informing the administrators that the site wasn't working so they can fix it when they get time. I say "GREAT JOB KEN" and don't give up! SOOOOOO lets TALK DIESEL'S:D
