I know this has been discussed a lot before, but did a search and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Is there a website that states the specific fines for each state associated with running red fuel?

I'm a farmer and just filled up my bulk tank (7800 gallons) for $1. 31/gal (low-sulfur red fuel). I'm not going to put it in the pickup... but just makes a guy think hmmmm, doesn't it?

Its fairly common to get your tanks dipped up here (ND). Where I've seen it most often is at auction sales, because there are a lot of farmers with old diesel pickups and a service tank in the back, which makes them pretty suspicious. Its also interesting to note that I've never been dipped with our semi's (although I've been weighed plenty of times), but watch out with your pickup. Thanks guys!

I calculated that at 30,000 miles/year, and overall average of 15 mpg, and with red $0. 45 cheeper/gallon... works out to a saving of $900/year.

Like I said, I don't think its worth the risk for me, but just makes me go hmmmm.

when I pass the marina along the road and see the diesel pump that says $1. 149 it doesn't tempt me, it makes me angry. between taxes and insurance, how much of your money do you actually get to keep...

Let's see for '03 -

fed taxes over $11k

state- over $3K

health ins- over $9k

just those two taxes and health coverage works out to $11. 54 an hour gone before the check is even paid

I take that back the red does tempt me

I'd still like to know if someone has the numbers. And please, no stories about your brother's, neighbor's, step-son's, friend got fined $20,000.

Think twice before trying red fuel on the highways in Washington State, the following is a news release from the WSP last year.

Bill

Washington state tracks red diesel on roads

The Washington State Patrol is crisscrossing the state to crack down on illegal use of dyed diesel. Officials say the state has had enough of farmers and other offenders fueling their rigs with red diesel in order to save 47. 4 cents a gallon in state and federal taxes.

The Evergreen State reportedly loses an estimated $15 million to $30 million a year from fuel-tax evasion. That money typically would be used on road maintenance and construction.

The state police checked hundreds of trucks Aug. 20 as part of an investigation by the agency's fuel tax-evasion unit. State police seized records from a Franklin County farm accused of using the tax-exempt fuel for non-farm uses.

Farmers are considered by the state to be the top violators of red-diesel laws, followed by the construction industry and well-drillers. Violators can be fined $1,000 per vehicle.

During a search of the Pasco-area farm last Tuesday, police carted off fuel records dating back to January 1999. The records reportedly will be used to determine whether the state will pursue civil fines and unpaid taxes.

The State Patrol said it stopped six trucks from the farm for other violations earlier this month and found they were using red diesel illegally as they hauled harvest equipment for a custom-bailing operation.

This sounds kinda bad, but a $1000 fine doesn't sound that bad. If your drive a lot/year, and can keep the HP from getting into your fuel tank for a year or so, you'd be money ahead. But if/when you get caught, I'm sure you'd really be harassed by them every single time they pull you over (I'm sure it will pop up in your record when they run your plates), plus the dozen or so tankfuls (probably more) it would take to get the dye out of your tank.

I don't know if anything will get the red out. They make it like 10 or 20 times as concentrated than needed, just for that reason. JLovas, I'm with you. If you were able to run it for a couple three years, it's really worth it. I say uncle Sam gets enough of my money.

not to mention all the road tax that is collected on gas that is used off road and in things that never see the street.

I have never seen offroad use gasoline...

The thing that makes me mad is those taxes that are for "road maintenance and construction" isn't being used for that, it is going into the general fund and being used for anything. I feel it should ONLY be used for roads. I'll feel a little better about paying it then. John

You forgot about auto Ins.

Not to mention (uninsured motorist coverage) that covers all those driving illegally without ins.

I understand where you guys are coming from this tax on fuel period gas or diesel, Friggin rediculous.

Hmmmmm wonder how the highway patrol would like a farm tractor clogged highway, they can't fine you for running it in the farm tractor. But i must say that they (the tax man) is fighting a losing battle, why not have them join in on the fight against drugs with regular law enforcement at least they would be doing something worth fighting for instead of trying to bust some poor Farmers that are trying to get by and those of us that have been screwed over and over by paying their dam taxes, just a FWIW... .

 can you tell im fond of my gov't, besides red ain't a bad color LMAO

I paid $1. 569 yesterday in Russellville, AR for diesel. $1. 75 hear in Fayetteville. We all have Sam Walton's (Wal-Mart) money up here in NW Arkansas - at least that's what the fuel supplier in town thinks!

I agree with you WyattEarp

All the hundreds of billions of dollars that we send to all those foriegn countries( that are just breeding the next generation of American haters), could have been spent right here fixing our roads, and strengthening our borders.

This is slightly off subject, but it's an idea...

ok, tobacco is bad for us, right?

get some of these tobacco farmers to grow soy for bio diesel, hell govt' subsidize if we have to for new equipment or whatever it takes to make the change. Then take a few of these large tobacco facilities and turn them into bio- refineries( or just build the bio refineries near the largest concentration of soy crops. )

make some good of the land and put some people to work doing something to make america more self sufficient and a better place to live. imagine going bowling and not choking on cigarette smoke:D I know it could NEVER happen. govt needs the tax $$ from cigarette sales. but it sure would be nice if the tobacco co would realize they could make as much making fuel for our trucking industry, and ships, and tractors and cars...

robobx, Don't worry about lost $$ from no more cigs. As our Govt. is quite proficient at finding new inovative ways to tax. as a matter of fact, they are looking for ways to tax biodiesel as we type.
