Dealing With The Loss Of A Loved One

I've always liked having a good/bright flashlight around - and the thought of having one with an HID/metal halide lamp makes me smile.

For the longest time, this sort of thing was ~$400+. NOW - they're down to about $70 on eBay (including shipping!).

I pulled the trigger last Thursday and ordered one up. It arrived Saturday afternoon and I couldn't wait to get it out of the box. It had a little charge in it, so I fired it off - I couldn't believe how bright it was during the day. TDR member "PLafrombois" was there in person to see me giddy like a kid on Christmas morning. :-laf

Anywho - I charged 'er up and took it out that night. I won't go into all of the adjectives and expletives I used to describe how well the light works - it's unreal. In typical HID fashion - it fires off right away... but it gets progressively brighter over a period of ~15 seconds.

I still have a 2-million candlepower (55W halogen?) spotlight, but that thing just might start collecting more dust than it usually does. The HID spotlight is lightyears better (pun intended... ).

Out in the country, all kinds of folks drive by the house and spot deer in the fields with halogen lights. So, I played a few quick games of "your light isn't as bright as mine" with some passers by as a quick comparison... and learned that there is no comparison. My light was brighter and carries further than theirs... AND it uses less electricity.

Of course, the higher color temperature (6000° Kelvin compared to ~3000°K) of the HID lamp causes a perceived increase in light output compared to halogen... but it goes beyond that. The plain and simple actual light output between the sources (in lumens) is like comparing apples to kiwi fruit.

The light I bought is made by Vector Products - which appears to be part of Black and Decker. My other halogen light is made by them and I also have a 'smart' battery charger with that nameplate. So far, all of these devices have served me well.

Here's a review of the exact light I own:

LEDs - Gallium Indium Nitride UV, violet, purple, blue, aqua, turquoise, green, white. Also Gallium Arsenide and others. New LED MUSEUM! GaN, InGaN, SiC, GaAs, GaP, GaAlP, ZnSe, flashlight, flashlights.

I have no vested interest in this company - so I stand nothing to gain or loose by passing along what may sound like a big advert. As always, YMMV and you are your own warranty station. :)

Beers,

Matt - I love the sound of a HID ballast firing up in the evening...

Nice! I see one of these in my future. It'll be nice to keep on the boat for late night summer cruisin!

You can never have too much light. I've got 2 million candle power worth of offroad lights on my truck and it used to seem like a lot.

Thanks for the post.

35w of HID is WAY brighter than 50w of hallogen.

The lights in the Merdedes and BMW's are only 35w, but as I'm sure you've noticed as you've passed them..... it seems WAY brighter.

Yup - those are the critters.

(I picked a vendor that was here in WI so the shipping would be quick. )

I used the light on Saturday AM/PM... still LOVE it.

On Friday night, my neighbor stopped by with his BMW with HIDs while I was out walking the dogs - my light was brighter on the same area his lights were shining on. This isn't a fair test or any sort of meaningful comparison (especially since my light has a totally different goal/purpose in mind... hence the different reflectors) - but it was neat to see. He had to one-up me by steering right/left - the headlights move with the steering.

i saw a hid spotlight at harbor freight the last time i was there for 100, if it goes on sale it's mine no question and i don't even need a spotlight it's that cool

I've seen the light that HF sells at their local retail store and it is probably the same darn thing.

Word to the wise when dealing with HF - pick out what you want online and print out the entire page showing the model number, description and price. 9 times out of 10, the store price is higher... much higher in some cases.

The retail store here will honor the online price if you show them the printed page(s). No questions asked.

IIRC, the online price for that HID light through HF was $89 - so the eBay lights are cheaper yet.

100% Correct

Yep - do your homework online with HF -

Nothing really new regarding the light - still love it and have demo'd it to a few folks and watched their jaws drop when they see 'er fire off.

I'd put this up there with some of the best buys I've ever made...

I've had evil thoughts of getting one or two more of these things and aiming them so that the spots all converge. Poor deer around the house will all have defective retinas in no time. :-laf

i just popped the harbor freight light for $75 and it didn't say anything about a sale that was the price on the shelf, i got my own personal light saber now :-laf

I still have the same HID spotlight and it still amazes me every time I use it - I contend that it has to be one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I thought of this thread recently. I bought some inexpensive Peterson Mfg. model V502HF lights for the tractor with replaceable H3 lamps... so I did what anyone else would do - got some $29 4300°K HID lamps for it which I'll use with some cheap ballasts I already had. :)

Initial results are promising. I'm liking the 4300°K color temperature - it's less annoying than the 6000°K lamps I had in the Camry. The 4300°K lamps after some time eventually end up at around 5000°K - which is optimal in many regards.

By re-lamping a cheap set of lights - you end up with all the benefits of HID for less bread than a set with built-in ballasts (which start at around $100 per light and go from there... ). Granted, the reflector might not be optimized for an HID lamp - but with that many lumens being output with only 35W and for cheap coin, who cares? :)

Cheers,

Matt

How did those aftermarket headlights work out with the HID kit? (I haven't searched around to see if you made a new post... yeah, I'm that guy. )

Beers,

Matt

A quick second to how it all worked out, quality of the lights and the HID conversion. And most importantly how much $$$$.

Thanks much,

RR
