Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) low engine power

I have a friend that has a 02 with 116k on the clock. He is currently in Kuwait guarding an empty warehouse. He has no gauges and as far as I can tell, no performance mods. I am looking at cleaning up his truck before he gets home and am also wondering if there are any cheap mods. I was thinking of getting him a set of gauges. Fuel pressure would be a must, pyro and boost would be nice additions. Also, how much is a Walbro lift pump set up?

The truck seems it might be a little low on power and no turbo whistle, but then I am used to an 05 with SMARTY SW-3 and lots of turbo whistle.

Thanks for the ideas.

I think cleaning up the truck and gauges are a great idea.

As far as the power adders . . . they can get down right pricey and there are other things (trans if auto/clutch if a stick) that are weak links once you start adding power.

I suggest if it's an auto going with a combo Pyro/Boost gauge so you can add a trans temp gauge.

As for the Walbro Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail You could also go for the big line kit and 2 micron spin on filter set up. Talk w/Rich and he'll most likely do a custom kit for your buddy.

thanks Joe for the info.

The truck is the 5 speed manual. Is this the transmission that has the 5th gear nut issues?

Also, other than the a-pillar and top of windshield are there any other mount points anyone likes?

Cleaning up the truck is a great idea, but I wouldn't do anything else without his permission. He may not want performance additions. I know I wouldn't.

I don't know about an 02, but the 5th gear nut was a big problem on 95 to 98's.

If the truck has been sitting for a while, cleaning it up and bringing all the needed services up to date and filling it with fuel would be a great gift. I agree with Grizzly, they used to say KISS, keep it stock stupid. The gages, especially the egt and fuel pressure would be good too. bg

You might check the classifieds on this site for a used Edge EZ. It's pretty simple & it's even good for 1 or 2 mpg. If he doesn't like it he can just unplug it & sell it off again. I put a Westach combo boost egt. & a fuel pressure gauge in a pair of bullet mounts on top of the dash right next to the pillar. They are out of the way & easy to read.

Remove silencer ring for more turbo noise and maybe an open/free flowing filter!? BHAF. I don't know what those filter's cost, i think there cheap. Just a suggestion. Great idea for your buddy! ;)
