Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) BHAF question...

I had a bad experience with my CTD this weekend while we were moving. I had borrowed a landscaping trailer from a friend to haul all of my stuff. I have no complaints on how the engine and the truck handled all that weight. I still got about 16mpg with that trailer fully loaded. Anyway, the bad experience was with the mirrors. I have the flip out towing mirrors and have never gotten the chance to use them in the nearly 4 years I have had the truck. I decided that I would be able to see a little bit better if I folded them out on this run and I had my brother-in-law flip the mirror and adjust it for the new position. The passenger mirror has always been a little stiff and I told him that you have to push to get it to move. The next thing I see is the mirror rotate in the plane of the surface and then disappear with a crash on the pavement. It was only held on there with 3 pieces of double sided tape!:--) Needless to say, I didn't fold out my mirror for fear that the same thing might happen and I would really be out of luck. Now I need to get a replacement so it doesn't look (in my B-I-L's words) like I am being followed by a death star. Just thought I needed to vent.

Holy smoke, my passenger mirror as been broke twice like that. Last year before I put the new glass in I gave it a good lube with some marine grease and worked it back and forth some. It was stiff but loosened up a little. Put in the new glass and used those flip ups all summer long. Come first time I go to use them this spring I ask wife to flip it up and adjust it... ... . dog gone it! glass broke into about 5 pieces. Must be a common problem. Sticky patches did hold it however.

The mirror bracket is held in by a "push on" nut. If this is too loose, the mirror will not stay adjusted. To tighten this "puppy" you have to use a section of steel tubing that will fit over the mounting post. The only way I know to tighten this "nut" is to hit the tubing above with a hammer to "push" it on further. You have to take the glass out to get to this nut. Taking out the glass means you have numberous pieces cause you can't get it off in one piece. Replace glass is available at any good glass shop for about $30.

Huh I was just reminising about my first ever thing to go wrong with the truck other than having me as an owner. and that was just it! I remember sittingin my drive way and looking out the window at the mirror to back up when I noticed the mirror was aweful dark and had holes in it. so I hop out and look on the ground and a million shards of mirror are right under well ... . where the mirror was. Huh Small world!
