Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cheap smoke device!

I recently read a post where someone was asking for cheap smoke and thought of something... ... ..... how about a valve somewhere between the turbo and the intake, pre or post aftercooler, that could be actuated from the cab with a mechanical linkage ( or electric), this would essentially dump your boost and produce an instant smoke screen. Close the valve and off you go! I cant see how this would hurt the motor.

Ever been tried?

Also, if a 3 way valve was installed, this could serve as a safety device capable of shutting down a run-away diesel by cutting off the air source completely.

Kinda like when you exhaust brake sticks on. Makes for really high EGT's.

I just thought of this recently also. Wonder how big of a hole would be needed to dissipate 25-35+psi at ? cfm... . might not need too much to be effective tho. . hmmmmm A remote ballvalve could be rigged... hmm



that recent smoke of a snot shooter gave me that idea

hmm doesnt seem like quite a good idea due to the lack of replies... I thought about this some more, and, with a lack of boost, wouldnt the afc cut off all fuel? or most of it, that is... hmm...



anyone else?

Opening the intake system could allow dirt/debris into the head and dust a piston. . . just thought of that one

If you are running an aggressive fueling box, then it SHOULD dump the fuel in regardless of the boost. I can't speak about all boxes, but I know that on "kill" mode, my Blue Chip starts adding fuel at 0 PSI boost. Most other manufactures that I have read about have an "aggressive" setting that starts adding fuel at low boost pressures.



I really like your idea. Please let us know if you get around to developing/testing it.

edit: My bad... it just registered that by saying "AFC" you don't have an overly-valved truck. I have no freaking idea how this would apply to a 12 banger.

being an old retire army auto tech the M60 and m1 have a 1-4 inch line attached to the exhaust after the turbo as an smoke generator it is controlled by an electric solenoid the turbo pushes the raw fuel out

I was thinking about this exact thing. Although I was thinking about a 7th injector after the turbo--the problem is that the pump only has 6 lines going out of it! Maybe some kind of tee off the output line of the lift pump? Obviously you couldn't use a regular fuel injector with that method, but some kind of nozzle that would work with the lower pressure of the lift pump... Hmm...

swendell: yea i thought about that. Could mount a small hiflow filter on the outlet of the valve to prevent anything coming in, but there is 1+ psi there on acceleration, so it would not pull a vacuum while smokin... hm could put an inline check to take care of that. .



forrest-- na, dont want to run full open all the time, mpg is a big concern.



Nelsonf-- Welcome to TDR. interesting idea, I`ve heard of that before. wonder if it would overheat the exhaust though (the downtube being right next to the passenger floor)

I have my housing and wheel full forward, and I made a flat rack-stop plate that's damn near like running no plate... .



MPG and smoke are controlled by the right foot... I haven't noticed any noticable difference in mileage since I modified the plate and slid the AFC housing forward. the star wheel was always forward, but smoke is still very controlable w/ the right foot

Why not use one of the automotive electric fuel injection pumps they put out about 60# of pressure and then use a spray nozzel into the exhaust just after the turbo?

LMAO, now thats what I'm talking about. Just need to hook up an air filter on the intake horn. hehe.





If you really want some smoke, I always heard to put in some 370's, laser cut DV's, and slide that plate on up and watch out.

that's what I'm talkin' about... with a P-7100, there's no reason not to make the smoke using fuel through the INJECTORS!!!



when I want smoke, I floor it... when I don't, I'm easy on the throttle... it's as simple as that.
