Currently the next mod on my truck is going to be the transmission and I am curious to know what would be cheaper and/or more worth it to go with. The choice is between getting the 1 3/8" input shaft upgrade to the NV4500 or just go to the complete NV5600 conversion. Obvioulsy either way I would have to get the larger clutch for the shaft, but I am planning on an SBC double disk so that is taken care of.

With that in mind what would be the cheaper, more worth it route?? I understand that upgrading my NV4500 would most likely be the "cheaper" route but if I can get together and NV5600 conversion for say just $500-$1000 more than the NV4500 upgrade then I would go that route, but I want to hear what you guys have to say about this option.

BTW, some quick questions that someone may be able to answer about the NV5600 conversion.

1 - What is this starter spacer that I have read about that is possibly needed? I believe it could also be called a clutch spacer but not sure as I saw 2 different names for the piece but was unsure if I needed it??

2 - I have the wider crossmember already, so good there, is there anything else that is needed besides lengthening the t-case shifter rod? What about the "transmission adapter plate" I have read about, is that needed as well with the conversion?

Overall, I think the conversion is a quick and easy swap, but want to make sure there are no loop holes I am missing if I decide to go that route.

THANKS A LOT GUYS! :D Oo.

I just did a 5 to 6 speed conversion and the starter and engine bellhousing lined up with no problems using a drilled 5spd to 13" clutch flywheel. Personaly I'd do the 6spd while increasing the value of the truck.

you need a spacer if Peter sends you a 6 spd flywheel instead of a 5spd flywheel. The five speed is faster shifting by far, especially with a dual disk, but over 475 HP is rough on fifth and third gear, even with all the upgrades on the 5 spd. The 6 spd is much stronger and is spaced out much better than the 5 spd.
