Looking to get a Jacobs exhaust brake for my 97 5spd. BTW not looking to purchase any other brand. Where would be the most reasonable place to buy one? Would it be straight from Cummins or is there an online vendor that some of you all prefer? Pretty sure the Rambrake part number is #3804848.

Also does anyone know if they come with a gearshift push/pull knob like the 3rd gens?

Thanks

Dave

That is the correct part#. Mine came with a toggle switch, which I still use, but it would be easy enough to wire it to a push/pull knob. It also comes with 6 60 pound valve springs for the exhaust valves. Buy 6 more and while you are at it replace the intake springs too if you plan to get a governor spring kit.

For pricing you might get a better deal at Mopar4less. If you call them be sure to ask for internet pricing.

They don't... but you have a couple choices. You can buy the switch/mount separately from Dodge, or you can buy the switch/mount from BD, or you can go to a heavy truck store and buy a generic push pull switch for $10-15 ... that is that I did, and I wired it in along with a PacBrake micro switch under the throttle. Works great. The gearshift switch is the master on/off, and the micro switch under the throttle is secondary on/off switch to turn on /off when pushing on the throttle, or letting off...

why are you set on a jacobs i have run one and just sold it and swapped to a pac brake and i like the pac brake alot better. as for the switch you can do whatever you want. i bought a bd push pull switch and mounted it on my stick like a 2-speed rear end works great.

Thats the first I have heard for doing the Intake valves. Sounds like a good idea so I will keep it in mind, thanks.

Great advice on the pull/push switches. Doesn't the Jacobs come with a micro switch under the throttle? How else would it release the brake when the pedal is pressed?

OE uquipment is always my first choice but Pacbrake would be my second if I could not locate the Jacobs. Besides it appears the Jacobs works better then the Pac??

This is directly quoted from Dodgeram.org:

"The following figures were sent to me by each of the manufactures. You can make up your own minds. All figures are with the 60# springs.

The following are the RHP(retarding horsepower) as given by the manufactures via e-mail:"

Yes, it mounts on the front of the engine and the throttle linkage depresses it when you are at idle. Be sure to write your engine serial number down before you install the bracket! Once it is on there it is very difficult to see the data plate.

Just a quick side question. What do you guys do when you are in a "NO ENGINE BRAKING ZONE", and have the thing wired with a micro switch? Do you have a way to disable it via another arming switch? There are lots of towns around me (central NJ) with clearly marked signs as you enter the town stating "NO ENGINE BRAKING" unless emergency situation. Just curious.

That is for "unmufflered engine braking" (compression relief style) not exhaust brakes

On the newer models the micro switch mounts at the throttle in the cab

Dittos, my thoughts exactly.

Does anyone have wiring diagram for the RamBrake? I've got 2 wires I'm trying to figure out. . a red one (i presume is 12v switched? ) and a white one. I've got no idea where it goes. the other end apparently goes to the micro switch under the throttle pedal. .

The directions for mine read (for 94 -97 vehicles only),and paraphrasing.

Attach wwiring harness to the power supply. This wire is white with an inline 10 amp fuse and 5/16 ring terminal. Remove cover from power dist center. Remove nut from the positive terminal lug . Mount 5/16 ring over the positive terminal lug and reinstall nut. Tq to 50 in/lb

Install wiring harness to on/off toggle switch. Route the yellow and red wires through dash panel. Connect to the two terminals on toggle switch and mount in a 1/2 inch hole that has been previously drilled.

thank you. so the white wire is 12v constant. I don't see a yellow wire. My ebrake is for an 94-97 as well, IIRC.

is there any way you can scan/email the installation manual? take pictures of the pages, something? I'd very greatly appreciate it.

In the first and second pictures, you can see the white wire and red wire that I am trying to figure out. .

In the above picture, you'll see a yellow wire close to the top of the pic. this has been connected, already to it's corresponding yellow wire, where it was cut during EB removal. The white wire in the middle, that's stripped on the end, tested (continuity) to the black blug in the upper left, next to the barrel-connectors (which is the brown wire in the splices). .

As i said, only the red wire and white wires are the ones left to connect, and I have no idea where they go.

Very happy with the Jacobs brake. It's a Cummins part as well (came with the cummins sticker). I ordered it from Hoesli Diesel (they had the best prices by far). Also ordered the Cummins push/pull shifter mounted switch. It came with the correct gaskets and a toggle switch in the box. I prefer the shifter switch. You will not be disappointed.

As stupid as this sounds the red wire is also hot. The harness you show in pic #2 the white goes to the PDC as stated, the red goes to the hot terminal of the grid heater relay. That means it is switched because that terminal is only hot with the key in the run position. One end of the yellow goes to the relay in picture #1, the other goes to the toggle switch.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll photo all the pages and send them to you. I can also send you pictures of my install.

My hat's off to GAmes for spending way more time that he should have, ensuring he got me the installation manual! I can't thank him enough, and this type of assistance is leaps and bounds above some of the other forums that I'm on.

Thank you!
