I know this topic has been up a few times, but I thought once more couldn't hurt. What is the cheapest mod I can do to my truck for better mileage? Will an exhaust, or a smaller housing help? What about different injectors? I can't afford to swap a 518 or add an overdrive.

The cheapest and easiest way is no fun at all. Keep your foot light on the throttle!

Ever since I put in the new injectors and tweaked a bit, I drive a bit harder than I used to! Love that feel. #ad

Probably airflow improvement would help the most. Maybe remove the muffler or a K&N filter. Stuff like that.

I agree. . a good highflow airfilter will help. Also I had a struggle with mileage myself after my mods.
You can adjust the injector pump slightly so that your fuel comes on a little later with throttle position. This way it is running a little stingy at normal to moderate throttle opening and doesn't start dump juice till you really jump on it. I found that did help a bit. It took some trial and error but I'm back to near 19 around town stop and go stuff which is not too bad for me. Haven't had a chance to check highway mileage yet though. You can also run a good dose of injector cleaner through the system to make sure that they are not slightly clogged or gummed up. Actually I run Stanydine most of the time and do notice a perf. and mileage difference when I don't add some to a tank of fuel

On the highway, drive slower. Makes a huge difference to drive 60 or 65 than 70 or 75.

Remove your bug shield, visors, or any other aftermarket product that might change the airflow characteristics of the truck. These will only make a difference at highway speed.

Saw off your muffler and put a straight pipe on it. Kinda loud, but instant efficiency gain in your engine which translates to higher mpg.

Terry, in addition to the above, cruise control does not enhance mileage, but instead a steady foot on the pedal or better yet some sort of manual throttle set mechanisim increase mileage.

I average high 20's with my Cummins on the highway. It has 3. 54 gears and the stacks which I think help the mileage.

The thing that might be assumed to decrease my mileage is the huge Moose catcher of a bumper that the previous owner mounted on my truck. My guess is that with 400+ foot lbs of torque, aerodynamics play a very insignificant roll in mileage, hence my high 20's.

Around town, it gets maybe 20. I can't seem to resist to put the hammer down at the lights.

Just remembered keep your tires properly inflated and you will see increased mileage.

I had some experince with a loss of fuel milage. Changed my truck to the D-350 type wheels and could not get the tires in balance. The wheels were not centering on the lug nuts. Fixed the problem and got the fuel milage back up to what it was getting before.
