Virus question

I recently sold my old computer to a friend, while showing her how to use it I connected to the net via my server with info stored in the computer,it worked. I was wondering if the IPS's have some sort of way to stop this as I can use the same account on my new computer, sort of a two for one deal. Haven't tried having both computers on the net at the same time yet. They must have a way to prevent this right?Otherwise every body in town could use the same account.

Bill,

If they have some sort of check for that it doesn't work very well. I have my computer in my travel trailer in Sacramento (I'm working a contract in Roseville) and my wife uses her computer here at home in Eureka. Both of us are on line at the same time a lot. Her Juno.com e-mail checks to see if there is an internet connection and uses it if there is. So I have her computer set up to dial up my ISP for that. She can also surf the net. So far there has been no indication of a squawk from the ISP about us both being on line at the same time. When I'm home like I am now I use her computer to access my e-mail and the internet.

Bill,

I have found this to be true also. I can dial in on both my laptop and desktop at the same time from my home/office. Same physical location, but separate phone lines. In fact, when I am on the road, I have sent e-mail back and forth in near real time using the same account. The first time I did this, I figured there would be an error message warning me that the account was already in use, that isn't the case.

You would want to make sure your on line time is unlimited, especially if someone else is using your account.

Another interesting thing is as JoeG mentions. I can dial into a different ISP and receive my e-mail through that portal. You just have to say OK, when IE asks if you want to check for e-mail on the existing connection.

If you have AOL or Compuserve you can not log on to the same account at the same time. Their software detects another user and blocks another from logging on.

Depends mostly on the type of user security they use. Most large isp's have server farms all over the place which keep mirrored copies of user accounts. Depending on the configuration, most administrators allow a minimum of 2 log-in's per account due to the fact that when you log off, the "network" most likely will not notice this right away. Say you logged off and forgot to check your mail and logged right back on, you'd be real pi**ed if you got a message saying "you are already logged on" or something to the effect... I manage a 250 user network and our minimum allowance is 2 connections per user (even at only 250 users it sometimes takes 5 minutes for a person who has "logged off" to be actually "logged off" as far as the network is concerned).

In a nutshell, most likely there is a limit, but it's probably at least 2-3. However, if the isp runs reports for mulitple access times (which I would think they would do)... this would probably show up. But then again, they might just be grateful you haven't dumped them for cable or dsl and thus, could care less.
