Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Check engine light and can smell raw fuel?

Put a few miles on my pickup last night for a bachelor party and towards the end of the evening my check engine light came on and then the guys all said they could smell diesel. The smell was strong on the exterior and I could see no leaks on the filter, gauge, banjos, etc. I'll check the code later today, but does this sound familair to anyone? It never displayed any problems, still runs great.
