Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Check engine light on

I need some help from all of the knowledgable people on this site. I have a 99 2500 CTD 2 WD with an auto transmission with 130,000 miles. The truck is completely stock no mods what so ever no even the air filter. The check engine light come on and I can not get it to give me any codes. I did a search and was able to find out how to get the codes to come up on the odometer. I tried it on the 99 and nothing happens the, then I went to test it on my 01 2500 CTD 4X4 6sp it came back with no codes and the ------ P done. The truck still runs fine but every once you can smell diesel in the cab. I do not know if that has anything to do with the light or not. Any suggestions on why I can't get the codes to show or am I doing something wrong? I know that I have not many posts on this web site but any information would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a long post.

On my 99, you have to have some kind of scanner. I use my Hypertech programmer to get to the codes. Let us know what you find out. There seems to be a lot of 99 model trucks having the check engine light come on.

Go to Auto Zone. They can plug a scanner into the port and pull the codes. Worked great on my 2000.

Just thought that I would give an update. Went to Autozone on Thursday to have the code read it showed two codes both being the same PO336. Went and got a sensor, but it being the holidays did not get a chance to change it until today(Sunday) and it was the wrong part. Called all the parts stores that were open and all told me that they would have to order the sensor. So I guess that I am without the truck this week until I can get back to fix it.
