The little engine on the dash lit up this afternoon after I started my truck. Turned it off and cycles the key three times the code was P0514. I looked it up the corresponding message is "Battery Temperature Sensor Performance / Rationality" What does that mean? I did a search on the manual I have on CD but could not find anything. Does anyone know what this error means, I really do not want to take it to the dealer unless I have to.

Found the answer, there are sensors in the bottom of the battery trays that monitor the temp of the batteries to determine the state of charge. One of mine must have a problem. Anyone else ever seen this problem?

From the Powertrain Diagnostics Manual, page 154:

P0514 - Battery Temp Seonsor Rationality

When monitored: when the engine is running

Set condition: the ECM does not read a change in value from the sensor over time.

Test:

-Remove the temperature sensor and reconnect the wiring harness connector to the sensor.

-While monitoring the DRBIII, heat the sensor with an external heat source (DO NOT USE A FLAME).

-If the reading on the DRBIII increases at least 5 degrees, you have an intermittent condition.

-Otherwise, replace the battery temp sensor.

I'd bet your battery temp sensor bit the dust. :)

I had this same thing last month ( around 11k miles) took to dealer and they replaced, I have also seen several posts on P0514 lately, must have been a bad batch of sensors.

It can also be caused if you pull it out a warm garage and park it outside in the cold for a bit. The coolant temp (lots of mass) is warm, the battery temp is cold (changes quickly from warm to cold) so it throws the rationality code. Also happens if you push a no start into the shop to work on it. Same theory, just in reverse.
