These Numbers are Killin' Me

A few Questions for the pro's

Over the weekend I was up in the local mountains there was some snow and ice.
I started to slip on a hill and dropped to first gear and yanked for the 4x4. I belive I lugged the motor lower than the idle speed.
When I looked down I noticed the yellow engine symbol was lit. The motor was still cold, Well maybe warm (3 miles?). We drove the truck home starting and stopping several times. The lamp remained lit. This morning I started up to go to work and expected to see the lamp..... It was Not lit??? What happened?

it can take 15 to 18 key on-engine running-key off, cycles to clear a code

dont worry, unless it lights up again under normal conditions.

The best way to tell for sure is to read the MIL code stored in the computer. To do this turn your ignition on-off-on-off-on and the code (or codes) will read out on your digital odometer. You have to get the right on-off speed going to obtain the read-out mode. Codes are listed in the shop manual under "emission control systems. " If the "error" was transitory, it will go away after a prescribed number of error-free starts. #ad
If it's a hard error, it (and the lamp) will remain. #ad
