My son borrowed my truck to take some stuff to southern California & on the way there the check engine light came on. THere were no other symptoms (No white smoke, no dead throttle etc. ) He had the light checked out at an auto parts store & it revealed a P0216 code "Injection timing control circuit malfunction" he said that there was another code but they were unable to retrieve it. The code was cleared & the light has not came back on after approx. 40 miles or so. but he still has the trip back to No. Calif. The truck is a stock 2002 2500 with approx. 95000 miles on the odometer. I've started searching past posts & looking at past issues of the TDR. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge on it but am seriously considering it. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance

If you still have warranty I wouldnt touch anything and would get it to the dealer asap.

Sorry to bring the bad news, but the 216 code means your Injector pump is failing.

One thing to note is the dealer may need to see the 216 code before they replace it, but at least you can have it documented that you had the code while under warranty, and had it cleared while it was out on the road. Not sure if that helps, but thats the straight scoop.

Also, a FP gauge and some kind of pusher pump are a couple of "must haves" for the future. Then you'll have a pretty good truck.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the reply. I hope it's still under warranty. I'll have to look at the fine print when my son brings the truck back. Can you provide some info about a "pusher pump"?

Should be 5yrs,100k. Tell him not to make any long detours and keep it under 100k when he gets back other wise DC will wiggle out of the repair if their warranty performance is still the same as usual.

Regarding your comment to add some kind of pusher pump. Would the "Vulcan Performance transfer pump relocation kit" offered in Geno's garage Catalog fill the need of a "pusher type" pump?

I took the truck into the local dealer today to have them check out the Check Engine light /verify the P0216 code. I just picked up the truck and it seemed to be ok on the short ride home. The work done as per the work order is as follow's. "Found code P0216. Performed system test rec. Replace lift pump & wiring. Removed tank & installed new intake fuel pump. Installed new electrical harness & bypass exterior mounted lift pump. Retested & found no further codes". So do you think that they may have solved the P0216 problem with this repair?

no. it sounds to me like what they found was no fuel pressure and they are now hoping you make it past 100k before the vp quits all together. " Injection pump timing malfunction" has nothing to do with your lift pump. It means that your injection pump has failed, or is about to.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I guess that all I can do now is hope that the check engine light comes on again before I go over 100,000k
