Went out to start my truck this morning and the MIL came on and would not go off. Truck has just under 12,000 on the clock.

Tried cycling the key for codes and nothing showed up, came back in and did a fast search here and went back out and held the trip/odometer knob in and turned the key on and let it cycle... . still no code.

Started it up and shut it off about 6 times and no more MIL but now it will not switch between trip and odometer:confused:

Drive train is stock... bling bling is all that has been added to it.

Any body got any ideas of what is up?

Called my Dealer and they can not get to it until NEXT WEEK to check for codes.

since the code has cleared the code is no longer active. I wouldn't bother with the dealer unless the code comes back.

Sometimes if you don't twist the fuel cap down tight enough after filling, the check engine light will come on. I had that happen once. Could this be the case?

I'm with you, unless you really trust your dealer stay away. They will run your vin and may reflash your ECM without asking. This is not always a good thing. I had a mystery CEL a while back that showed up the morning after I filled up my tank, then immediately parked overnite. It happened twice and cleared after 4 or 5 start/warm up cycles. I'm convinced that the fueling had something to do with this. I've been told that the fuel cap only alarms for gas engines (EPA mandated closed vent sytem). I don't fill up on the way home anymore, only on the way out. Sounds strange, but I've not had another CEL.

Well as far as it being caused by fueling up, thats not it, fueled up 4 days ago.

Dealer said the code would be in the history of the ECM.

Anyway called them back and said never mind on getting it checked, and might have them check it at next service... . sense right now or for 3 yrs/36 K its free.

On the diesel? There's no EVAP system on the diesels, so how the heck does the system detect a loose cap? Or did they add an EVAP system in 2006?

Try taking it to Autozone and getting them to check the codes. They won't clear any of them for you, but they'll check them for free.

I had the cel come on just now and started the truck 5 times and it went away. This is on a 07 w/5. 9. My 03 you cycled the key 3 times to read the codes. With the 07 I did the hold odometer/trip button. Now I don't know what I am looking at. On the 07 the dash board lights up like a Christmas tree. The speedo and all gauges go over to the far right and then numbers start to cycle in the odometer. As each number appears the gauges start to move back to the left. The numbers I am seeing don't match to anything I have been reading. The first number is a S to the far left and then 37. The next number is to horizontal parallel lines on the left and 323 on the right. The last number is a C on the left and 542 on the right. Has anyone seen what I am so poorly trying to explain?

You ran the instrument panel gauge test. Don't hold down the button to retrieve codes.

C542 may be an instrument panel code, but I'm not able to interpret it.

So is it still 3 turns of the key for the 07? If so, I get nothing. The 03 would at least say "done" or "none". I can't remember but it would indicate there were no codes

The check engine light on my 03 just came on yesterday after I did an oil / fuel filter change. Never had this before, but let it sit overnight. Today I cycled the key for any codes (got an P0073 ambient temp sendor high) and the MIL light went off. I did plug in the airbox sensor before starting yesterday, but maybe the connection was bad. Someone posted on TDR that this sensor can throw that code.

I had the CEL come on on my '07 5. 9 and the new procedure is to cyle the key 5 times ending in the on position and it will read the codes one at a time then display "done" in the odometer window. I agree don't let the dealer plug in or they are bound to mess stuff up.

If you have no codes, but the MIL is on, then you must have a transmission or other powertrain code present.

Pulling a fuse will make the MIL go out... . until you put the fuse back in.
