check engine light

well after 41,000 miles I finally have a check engine light. I have tried with the key , off - on off- on off-on first with the odometer on milage then on the trip setting, I thought this was the way to get the code, what am I do

You may be turning the key on/off too slowly, that's what I was doing. You've got to get the entire off-on done 3 times in under something like 5 seconds.
